DESCRIBING MOTION
GOAL/PURPOSE
IN THIS SECTION STUDENTS LEARN
HOW TO DESCRIBE MOTION USING
TERMS DISTANCE, DISPLACEMENT,
 SPEED, VELOCITY, AND
ACCELERATION.
 YOU WILL ALSO LEARN HOW TO
INTERPRET GRAPH OF MOTION

MOTION



KEY- AN OBJECT IS IN MOTION IF ITS
DISTANCE FROM ANOTHER OBJECT IS
CHANGING.
REFERENCE POINT- IS PLACE OR OBJECT
USED FOR COMPARISON TO DETERMINE IF
SOMETHING IS MOVING.
KEY- AN OBJECT IS IN MOTION IF IT
CHANGES POSITION RELATIVE TO A
REFERENCE POINT
Relative motion





KEY- DEPENDS ON YOUR REFERENCE
POINT. SITTING IN CHAIR NOT MOVING BUT
IF YOU USE THE SUN AS A REFERENCE
POINT YOU ARE MOVING.
DISTANCE- IS THE LENGTH OF A PATH
BETWEEN 2 POINTS.
EX- WALKING HOME FROM SCHOOL
DISPLACEMENT- IS THE LENGTH AND
DIRECTION THAT AN OBJECT HAS MOVED
FROM ITS STARTING POINT
EX- AS THE CROW FLIES???? THE
STRAIGHT LINE

KEY- distance is the total length of the
actual path between 2 points.
Displacement is the length and direction of
a straight line between starting and ending
points
