Background to SEP
• An independent, estuary wide initiative, initiated
by local authorities and statutory agencies
(1995)
• Severn Estuary Strategy (2001) provides a
strategic management framework
• Integrated view of issues, policies and proposals
for action
• Support for a wide range of estuary groups
• Many achievements over last 14 years
Main Area of Interest
Role of Partnership
• Establish a set of ‘principles’ for the estuary that
are delivered locally through individual
strategies, policies and action plans
• Act as a coordinating body to ensure that agreed
actions are delivered efficiently and effectively
• Promote and publicise the estuary at national
and international level
• Add value and fill gaps providing extra capacity
as necessary
• Ensure effective communications between
organisations and individuals
Severn Estuary Forum
• An annual conference with an estuary wide,
cross-sectoral remit
• The fourth Severn Estuary Forum
• Clevedon 2006 and 2007 / Penarth 2008
• Constant themes of climate change, energy
production, marine planning and shoreline
management
