Read Jehanabad Jehanabad district , Bihar Reading program by district administration Program led by cluster coordinators Supported by Pratham End June : Meeting with DM at his request July 2-3-4 : 3 day training for Cluster coordinators (CRC) for 2 blocks of district July : 15 working days : CRCs conducts “practice class” for 1.5 hours a day. 3 CRCs in a school July 28 : Review meeting to discuss way forward August : CRCs assess students in each school. Materials finalized and sent for printing Early Sept : All Headteachers meeting/orientation Sept 4-9 : 2 batches of teacher training by CRCs simulataneously in each cluster. 1 Pratham person to help in each training Sept 10-15 : Materials distributed to each school Sept 15 : Program starts Baseline : Reading levels of all children : 15 clusters /2 blocks Total : 224 schools & 669 teachers Std 3-4-5 Number % Story 2118 13.2 Para 2319 14.5 Word 2088 13.0 Letter 3920 24.4 Beginner 5595 34.9 Total 16040 100 “Readers” 27.70% Cannot even read words 59.30% CRCs did reading assessment of each child in the schools in their charge. At the start of the program, close to 60% of all children in Std 34- 5 in these schools could not even read words. “Read Jehanabad” launched in mid Sept 2012 Program runs well : mid Sept to mid Oct Holiday breaks for one month : Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhatth Sample : Cluster name : M.S. Kako Total : 11 schools and 48 teachers.
