The 6 Kingdom’s

Archaebacteria

 Found in

harsh environments

(undersea volcanic vents, acidic hot springs, salty water)  Cell walls

without peptidoglycan

 Subdivided into 3 groups based on their habitat ---

methanogens, thermoacidophiles, & extreme halophiles

Halophiles (like salt) Thermophiles (like heat)

Eubacteria

Come in 3 basic shapes ---

bacilli

(rod shaped),

cocci spirilla

(spheres), (corkscrew shape)  Most are food)

heterotrophic

(can’t make their own  Cell walls made of

peptidoglycan

 Can be

aerobic

(require oxygen) or

anaerobic

(don’t need oxygen)  Can be identified by

Gram staining

( gram positive or gram negative )

Eubacteria

Staphylococcus aureus

Bacillus anthracis

E. coli

Protist

 Eukaryotes  Most are

unicellular

Heterotrophs

that ingest small food particles & digest it inside

food vacuoles

containing digestive enzymes  Classified by the

way they move (cilia, flagella, pseudopodia...)

Amoeba Euglena Algae Rotifer

Fungi

        Do not contain

chlorophyll

(non-photosynthetic)

Store food energy as glycogen Most are saprobes –

live on other dead organisms Important

decomposers & recyclers

the environment of nutrients in Most are

multi-cellular

, but some unicellular like yeast

Non-motile Lack true roots, stems, & leaves

Cell walls are made of

chitin (a complex polysaccharide)

Mushrooms Ringworm Mold Yeast

Plant

 All plants are

multi-cellular

 Contain chlorophyll inside of chloroplasts  Cell wall made of

cellulose

 Plants (also called

autotrophs

or

producers

) trap energy from the sun by photosynthesis & store it in organic compounds  All plants that

reproduce sexually

Animal

 All

multi-cellular

(

metazoans

)  Cells

contain a nucleus organelles

and

membrane bound

 Cells

lack cell walls

Heterotrophs

(take in food & internally digest it)  Show l

evels of organization tissue, organ, & system

including

cell,

 Cells are

specialized

for particular functions

Ticket – Kingdoms

Take out a sheet of paper and tear it in half. Share with a neighbor. You may use the notes you just took.
