CareerSearch User Instructions
Beginning your Research
• It is now time to start preparing you
for the research portion of your
campaign. Stewart, Cooper & Coon
utilizes the CareerSearch database
which can be accessed at
http://www.careersearch.net/client
/ Once reaching the website, it will
be necessary for you to enter your
“Client Referral,” “Username,” and
“Password” information as a
Returning User, which we have
supplied for you. After entering this
information, select “Sign In.”
Home Page
• Once you have reached the
home page of CareerSearch,
place your cursor over
“Company Search” and select
“U.S. Advanced Search” from
the drop down menu. Now you
will begin identifying criteria to
build a target company list.
Industries
• Once selected, you will be
redirected to the Industries tab.
Here you will make your industry
selections from the provided list
by clicking in the box to the left
of the industry; any underlined
industry can be selected, in order
to view the subcategories. The
blue number to the right shows
how many subcategories that
industry has. {Hint: a.) to search
all industries containing a
keyword or words enter it in the
search box in the upper left hand
corner & click the “Search”
button to the right (example:
technology), remember to put
multiple words in parenthesis. b.)
whatever box you check will
select everything under it!}
Industries (continued)
• Additionally, you can search by
SIC Code or NAICS Code by
selecting the specific tab beneath
the Industry tab along the top.
Once selected you can search for
the SIC or NAICS code by
entering that specific code or by
choosing one from the drop
down menu, which will bring up
all industries that fall under that
top level industry. Our suggestion
is that you begin by selecting your
primary industries.
Products/Services
• Should you wish to do so, you
may choose your industry by
selecting the “by
Product/Service” tab. Once
selected, you can search by a
product produced or a service
provided by typing it into the
search box or by selecting the
letter of the product or service
provided from the drop down
menu, which will bring up a list
of products or services for you to
choose from.
By Size
• You may want to further refine
your list by size. Click the “by
Sizes” tab to see this criteria. At
this point, you can select revenue
and employee sizes. You have the
option of setting size restrictions
that apply to all your selected
industries or specifying size
restrictions for an individual
industry. {Hint: when you use
both revenue AND employee
size, the company must have
both criteria to be selected.}
Locations
• Next select the “Locations” tab at
the top of the page to begin
identifying criteria for
geographical locales, which can
be selected by state, {Hint: If you
want specific cities within a state,
click on the name of the state; if
you check the box next to the
state, you will get every thing in
that state} region, metro area, zip
code radius, or country by simply
placing your cursor over the
desired area of interest.
KeyWords
• Moving to the “KeyWords” tab
will enable you to list single
words, phrases or combinations
of terms into the text boxes on
this page. For example,
entering the term
“manufacturing” in the
“Description” field will return
all companies with the word
manufacturing in the
description or entering phrases
in quotes, such as “chief
information officer” in the
“Contact Title” field, will return
all companies whose titles
contain the phrase “chief
information officer.”
Get Results
• Once you have selected all your
desired criteria, choose the “Get
Results” button in blue, located
to the right of the screen.
• NOTE: It is best that you do
NOT attempt to click on the box
next to each company to unselect
companies or contacts, we
recommend that you continue
with the download process, then
review the spreadsheet, deleting
the companies you would like to
exclude from your list.
Criteria Selection
• Remember, the more selections and qualifying criteria you add, the
smaller your company list will be.
Detailed View
• A detailed view will provide
company name, physical/mailing
address, phone, year founded,
annual sales, number of
employees, SIC classification,
contacts, and other information.
Contact Selection (Continued)
• You can also make your contact
selection more detailed by
choosing the blue “Make
Selections” icon in the lower right
hand corner next to “Contacts”.
• Under By Category, selecting
“First Contact Found” ensures
that at least one contact will be
selected for each company. You
can also select the order in which
CareerSearch searches for entries.
Contact Selection
For example, if you select
President/CEO/General
Manager, then HR Executive,
then First Contact Found, the
system will first check for a listing
for President, CEO or General
Manger, then check for HR
Executive and if neither is found,
use the first contact listed.
• You can also enter a term that
you expect to appear in the title
by using the “By KeyWord”
option. Choose whether the entry
must contain the term, be an
exact match for the terms
entered, or be a synonym for the
word entered. Click “Build
Contacts.”
Saving Results
• Once all entries you have selected
are displayed in the criteria box to
the right, the database will be
ready for download.
• Select the tab labeled “Save
Results,” then select
“Downloads” (gray bar ).
• Select a file type (we suggest
using Microsoft Excel for
downloading as this format is
best for review with your
Campaign Director), then select
“Continue.”

appear where you will see the
“Available Fields.” We suggest
you include the following in your
file download: Company Name,

State, Mailing Zip, Phone
Number, Fax Number, Company
E-mail, Web Address,

“New record for each contact”
for company uploading purposes.

• Once complete, you will see
“Your export is ready.”
• Save this information to your
desktop or applicable folder, then
review the spreadsheet, deleting
the companies you would like to
exclude from your list.
• This can be easily done by:
1.Right click on the row header
(The row header is the gray bar
along the left edge of the
worksheet containing the row
numbers) of the row you want to
delete. 2.Choose Delete from the
menu.
Export Ready
• Pass the information on to your
Campaign Director.
• You will also need to add an
additional column to your
spreadsheet, labeled "WHY,"
where you will explain your
reasons the company should be
interested in you.
• The next step will be to continue
to build on this list, so that it can
be sent to a team for import to
your Personal Client Profile.
Searching a Single Company
• To research a single company,
begin by first selecting “U.S.
Quick Search”
• Enter the company in the field

• We recommend you use quotes
as limiters since this database uses
Boolean logic (example: “Cigna
Healthcare”).

“Company Search”
• Select “U.S. Quick Search” from
the drop down menu
• Next click the “Industry” drop
down menu and select your

search results, under “Keywords”

“Downloads” (gray bar ).
• Continue on following the steps
as you would for a “U.S.
Advanced Search”
More Helpful Hints
• The time allotted is 30 minutes per session. As you approach 30
minutes, a warning button will appear and ask you to save your search
data or excuse yourself from the system. If you get "bumped" after this
period of time, please try to sign on again and continue for another
half hour. If the slot is busy, try again until you are connected. Please
also be sure to log off when you are finished, as not doing so will tie
up the slot and others will be unable to log on to do their research.
• At any point during the search process, you can click the “Save This
Search” link directly below the Criteria box, in the bottom right hand
corner. This option will take you to the “Save Searches” section of
“My Account”. There, you can save your current criteria so that the
next time you log in you can promptly return to your search results.
Additionally, you can always find your most recent exports on the My
Account page. This export will have a name that begins with csit and is
followed by an extension.
• Should you wish to do an industry-neutral search, CareerSearch does
make it possible to select a company size without selecting any
industries, thus giving you the opportunity to search all industries.
More Helpful Hints (continued)
• When searching industries by SIC or NAICS codes, if a code is
selected from the menu provided, all companies in that code grouping
will be pulled. For example, if you search by SIC codes, then use the
dropdown menu to select "2000-3999: Manufacturing" and then select
"2011:Meat Packing plans" and click on save selections to criteria, it
will pull all companies in the 201 category, including 2010, 2011, 2013,
etc. which may pull companies outside of the interest area. However, if
you know the specific SIC code, you can use “KeyWords” to enter the
code and ONLY the companies with that specific code will be
identified.
• If for any reason, you need to make additional deletions from your
downloaded Excel spreadsheet, you can do so by deleting the row of
information. If you have downloaded several files, it helps to copy
them all into the same Excel file for review purposes.
More Helpful Hints (continued)
• Please be aware that when utilizing the drop down menu under
“Company Search” you can also create target specific lists for
“Recruiters” based on firm type, industry, or specialties. In Addition
to, “IT Departments”, based on “Software”, “Programming
Languages”, “Operating Systems” and “Systems/Servers”.
• PLEASE NOTE: We purchase the major national databases; the ones
we consider to provide the most value to our clients. These databases
tend to be accurate, to the extent that the companies providing them
data do so on a timely basis. Over the past several years, given the
turbulent and fast changing economy, database companies have found
that their data suppliers have been, in some cases, slow to update
information and the data is, therefore, not as up to date as we all would
like. Therefore, use this database as a way to identify companies in
your target areas that you might not have been aware of otherwise.
You and your Campaign Director will talk about how to validate
company and contact information once an initial list of companies has
been developed.
