BASIC TIMELINE/DETAILS OF THE
EXPEDITION
Planning takes nearly a year!
Leave from St. Louis, Missouri
on May 14, 1804
Fall 1804 travel through Sioux
territories – both friendly and
hostile interactions.
February 1805 Indian guide,
Sacagawea gives birth to a son.
April 1805 L&C send first
journals and specimens back
east to Jefferson.
Encounters several great
waterfalls of the Missouri River
in June 1805
By August 1805 they’ve
reached the Continental Divide
and the Shoshone tribe of
Sacagawea.
September 1805 – treacherous
crossing of the Rocky
Mountains
By the end of November 1805
they’ve reached the Pacific
Ocean and make winter camp.
March 1806 the begin to head
back East.
Summer 1806 the party
separates into two smaller
groups to explore more area.
Hostile interactions with
Blackfeet Warriors in July
1806.
August 1806 speeds them east
on the Missouri River.
Arrive back in St. Louis in
September 1806.
