How has the conflict ( whether ongoing or
not) affected the situation for women today
South Sudan lies in the Sub Sahara Africa it border DRC
Congo from the South West, Uganda and Kenya from the
South, Ethiopia from the East, Sudan from the North and
Central African Republic in the West.
South Sudanese fought more than four decades (1955-1972)
Conflict ceased due to Adais-Baba agreement ,in19832005 divested war ended with the signing of CPA
between NCP and SPLM/A.
It was part of Sudan till July 9, 2011 it seceded from the
Sudan to form 193rd member of UN family and 54th
Country in Africa.

government(s) led by SPLM.
South Sudan is multi cultural Nation with more than fifty
language spoken both pastoralist and agriculturalist.
It has about 8.5 million population, Arabic( Juba Arabic) is the
national language and English is official language in the country .
It has Christian dominated population all over south Sudan, 10%
being Muslim and about 2% traditional belief.
Government established system and are trying to make all possible
measure for good governance and also incorporated in the
system the Affirmative Action (25%) women representation in all
level of governance but still in the present, women have not
attained this due to several factors such as illiteracy, negative
traditional perception against women leadership.
There had been established ministry of gender and Social Welfare (
Development) to look in to gender issues but little have been
achieved.
The major conflict affecting women situation today in south Sudan
can be summarized as follows;



Border clashes affects women as they are rape as
weapon, force to stay in camps etc.
Tribal Cattle rustling among warriors groups
affect women as they are adducted with small
girls to be used as sex slave.
LRA ( Lord’s Resistance Army) abduct children
and women for wives for the commanders and
they are displaced to leave in congested camps
exposed to many risks including lack of proper
medical facilities, food security , rapes, poverty,
lack of access to Justice, education etc.



The conflicts prompted the presence of Army
within the population, including the UN
soldiers, Soldiers from the Neighbors
Countries made women at high surveillance
to HIV/AIDS.
Due to the conflict many NGOs and other
humanitarian organization are present to
educate women but haven't reached every
women at grass root.
