Using Write-N-Cite with Word 2007
APA Style
You must have downloaded Write-N-Cite to your computer
before continuing with this tutorial.
Use the directions Downloading Write-n-Cite to Your
Personal Computer at http://refworks.ua.edu
To Access Write-N-Cite in MS Word 2007,
click on the Add-Ins tab.
Remember, Write-N-Cite is a word plug-in
that accesses your references in RefWorks
to help create citations and a list of
references in a Word Document.
Click on the Write-N-Cite button.
Log in to Write-N-Cite
You can work with either all your
references or those in a particular
folder.
However, you cannot edit or import
references in Write-N-Cite.
You must use RefWorks to edit or
import citations
When you are ready to input a citation, open
the window for Write-N-Cite.
(The first citation will go here)
Find the reference you want to cite.
Click on the “Cite” link.
The citation will be inserted but not yet formatted.
{{ }} are placeholders until you tell Write-N-Cite what
format style to use.
Notice there is no page
number!
Click on “Edit Citation” to insert a page
number.
Insert the page numbers in the “Text After” box. You may need to
experiment with this depending on which format style you are using.
This works with APA Style. For APA style enter comma space p period
space page numerals [, p. 202]
Insert the exact format including commas and spaces.
Make sure to click on “Save to Word”.
The display will look like this.
Finish writing your paper, inserting citations as needed. Be sure to save
your work often.
Warnings
• Make a backup copy of your un-formatted
paper
• You cannot un-format your paper once you
create your reference page using Write-N-Cite
• A backup copy using the placeholders is a
good idea in case something goes wrong with
the conversion or you decide to change styles,
i.e. APA to MLA
Now we are going to
format our paper using
the Write-N-Cite
bibliography feature.
Select “bibliography” menu option
Choose the Output Style your want to use for your paper.
Click on “Create Bibliography”
SUCCESS!
Let’s look at you formatted paper
The citations should be all correct. However, there may be minor
typographical errors that need to be corrected. These could be conversion
errors or your typographical errors.
In this case I had forgotten the periods after the
citations. Simply edit the word document.
Save, print and turn in your paper.
