Getting Started
• Things to get on first day in PICU
– Ascom phone
– Pager (WR resident pager 1939)
– Orientation packet with articles/resources
• Security Office
– For badge (make sure get access to PICU
areas 3E and 3M –scan access to ward)
– Paying for parking (metro that goes from front
of bldg to Red Line metro)
Passwords
• Cerner is the Electronic Medical Record for
inpatient
• Password is 2 step process
– First is access to general login for computer (like
when you first login to navy computer)
– Second is access to Cerner (the charting
system)
– Credentials office must submit info to security
office and IT for passwords to get access to both
systems

• Trouble shooting:
– Dial HELP on any Ascom phone (IT office 24
hours)
– Can temporarily activate old ED acct for
Cerner access if credentials haven’t gone
through
– Same people to fix the COW computers too
Using Portable COWs
• Where are they?
– On 3 main toward the back
– Need to refresh battery, chargers in back
storage room of 3 main
• General logins to try (3 fields to fill in)
– Login: Hemocuser, password: Drbear111
– Login: Nicum1, password drbear1111
– Login: 7east, password Drbear111
– In the location field type: cnmc

Admitting Patients
•
Must go to ad hoc and record patient weight and allergies before can put in
orders
Admitting Continued
• Once you do that go to ADD link, then type in PICU. Now you can
click on the general picu orders.
• Now, this same “Add” link will allow you to type in any order request.
You can search by “contains” or “starts with” sometimes have to try
both to find the order you want.
• If a lab order is not found, then go to the ‘Links’ then lab formulary to
search for a special send out test. Must click ‘submit’ not just enter
for it to search properly
On general PICU
orders are prn
electrolyte orders
for nurses in case
you are asked
Overall….
• Computer system is user friendly
• Ask how to copy forward notes
• Do your History and Physical under the progress
note format for ease of daily note the next day
• Update hospital summaries weekly
• End of shift post-call at 0930
• Grand rounds on Wednesdays at 0800
• Radiology rounds at 0930 daily
• Daily lectures by senior PICU fellow at 1030
• Contact chief residents at any time for support
on issues
