Halloween began in Ireland
2,000 years ago.
The people were called the Celts.
They believed that on October 31st,
ghosts would come out and scare
people.
The Celts put
on masks to
confuse the
ghosts.
And burned
big fires to
scare the
ghosts!
In the 1800’s
when the Irish
came to
America, they
brought the
Halloween
holiday with
them.
The fires became Jack o’ Lanterns
The Celt’s masks became costumes.
