Kiwanis History
A Brief History of
Kiwanis
by Jim Uglum
Kiwanis International
Kiwanis International is a global organization of
members dedicated to serving the children of the world.
Kiwanis and its family of clubs—nearly 600,000 members
strong—annually raise more than $107 million and
dedicate more than 18 million volunteer hours to
strengthen communities and serve children. Members of
every age attend regular meetings, experience fellowship,
raise funds for various causes and participate in service
projects that help their communities. Members also make
an impact throughout the world by participating in Kiwanis
International’s new global campaign for children, The
Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and
neonatal tetanus.

The Eliminate Project
Kiwanis International’s global campaign for children, will
save or protect millions of mothers and their future
babies. In partnership with UNICEF, Kiwanis is
eliminating MNT, a disease that kills one baby every nine
minutes, by vaccinating women of child bearing age.
UNICEF and its partners have already eliminated MNT in
20 countries, and Kiwanis’ pledge to raise US$110 million
will help fund the elimination of the disease in the
countries that remain at risk.

 Builders Club – Jr. High/Middle School
 Key Club – High School
 Circle K – College
 Kiwanis Club – Career Oriented

Circle K International
 Circle K is a service club for collegians
and has clubs on more than 600
university and college campuses in 17
nations. Circle K was started in Pullman,
Washington, and was formally
organized as a service organization in
1947. Its members are committed to
leadership, service, and fellowship.
Key Club International
 The oldest Kiwanis sponsored-youth
program is Key Club. Seventeen boys in
Sacramento, California, made up the
first Key Club in 1925, and today the
organization is active in more than 20
nations and includes nearly 5,000 clubs.
More than 2 million youth have enlisted
in Key Club since its inception,
including many who are now top
government and business leaders.
Builders Club
 When middle school and junior high
students began to show an interest in
organizing to serve their schools and
communities, the Builders Club program
was launched in 1975. With support from
Kiwanis clubs, Key Clubs, and Circle K
clubs, the Builders Club network has
grown to include clubs on more than
1,200 campuses in 18 nations.
K-Kids
 This organization for elementary school-
age students began in 1990 when the
first club was formed in North
Lauderdale, Florida, and formally
adopted as a sponsored program by
Kiwanis in 1998. Today, there are more
than 600 clubs and 12 nations, all of
which are actively creating opportunities
for community service, leadership
development, and citizenship education.
Aktion Clubs
 In October 2000, Kiwanis extended service
opportunities to adult citizens living with
developmental disabilities through the
formation of Aktion Clubs. These clubs
provide members with opportunities to
develop initiative and leadership, to serve
their communities, to be integrated into
society, and to demonstrate the dignity and
value of citizens living with developmental
disabilities. To date, there are more than 200
clubs in seven nations.

Kiwanis International has six permanent objects:






To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the
material values of life.
To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human
relationships.
To promote the adoption and application of higher social,
business, and professional standards.
To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent,
aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
To provide, through this club, a practical means to form
enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build a
better community.
To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public
opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of
rightness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill..
