Take your strongest changes and continuities from the list
3 changes/ continuities
Use your list to identify your strongest changes and continuities
Put them to gather using 1-3 sentences
In Latin America from 1492 until the present, the most dramatic
changes in religious beliefs and practices have been the shift from local
religions to mostly Catholic beliefs and practices replacing them.
However, local religions still are practiced, holidays and festivals
are still observed, and religion has always remained a very important
part of social life in Latin America.

BODY PARAGRAPHS
•
After writing the introduction/thesis, all the body paragraphs
should follow the same format:
• TOPIC SENTENCE: each paragraph should be about a change or a
continuity
• EVIDENCE to support topic sentence
• ANALYSIS: how or why did this change or not?
• WORLD HISTORICAL CONTEXT: What other changes or processes
were occurring outside the region that are related to this topic?
- can bring in anything about Catholicism, or polytheistic
beliefs that relate to this topic, you should try and explain
-may not happen in every paragraph, but should attempt at least
twice.
BODY PARAGRAPH
The biggest change that occurred from 1492 until the present was the shift from
indigenous religions to Roman Catholicism. When Spanish explorers like Columbus
arrived from 1492 onward, they brought with them Catholic priests who were interested
in converting new people to their religion. Conquistadors like Cortez and Pizarro who
were able to conquer the Aztecs and the Inca, had a religious mission as well. The
reason most Native Americans stopped worshipping their previous religions was
because the Spanish were able to defeat them and wipe out the old cultural practices,
including religion. Catholicism became the new religion. This was during a time when
both Spain and Portugal were attempting to purify and spread Catholicism in their own
kingdoms and religion was very closely tied to politics.

Analysis
1st Body, move onto another Paragraph…either continuity
or a change.
Another continuity in Latin America has been the overall importance
of religion in society. When the Spanish arrived in 1492, the largest empires
were the Aztecs and the Incas, both of whom believed their political
leaders were divine. The Aztecs held large festivals to pray and sacrifice
communally. The largest structures that were built were usually temples or
pyramids devoted to the gods. People turned to religion for good weather,
crops, and luck in battle. Even after the shift to Catholicism, religion remains
a key element in society. People congregate at large churches to pray and
ask god for help with food and money and luck. Religion is a key feature in
Latin America life today. One reason for this might be the idea of a holy man
who is connected to God (the pope in Rome), may have been attractive to
people who used to believe their leader was divine. The pope continues to be
a respected figure by all Catholics worldwide.

REMEMBER….
• The more evidence you have the better
• Attempt analysis in every paragraph
• World historical context only counts if it is relevant to
the topic and can tie into the region somehow
• 2-4 body paragraph can be enough to score full
points, I recommend 3!!
• Conclusion is not necessary!!
