College Visits
 Visit the Student Union without the tour guide and speak




with current students about student life and academics
Sit in on a class
Eat a meal in the dining hall
Look around-Do you feel comfortable with the community?

 **Be sure to call ahead of time to set up an appointment for a
campus tour and info. session**
 If they have 2 tours at the same time, great for parents to
go on one and your child to go on another to get a different
perspective and to allow your child to ask their own
questions
 Make sure to fill out the attendance sheet or info. card so the
college knows you visited. (Many colleges track interest
demonstrated by the student)
 Our Feb. break/April break may be great times to visit if the
college is in session

Important Factors in the
Application Process:
 High School Transcript
 Grades earned and Courses student is taking(how rigorous)
 SAT or ACT Scores
 official scores sent by student not our school
 Online Application
 (Common Application SUNY/CUNY or individual college application)
 Letter(s) of Recommendation
 The Essay
 Activity Resume
 (or list you provide on Common Application)
Letters of Recommendation
 Ask two teachers informally at end of junior year and
formally at the beginning of the senior year(some
applications need one and some will need two)
 Remember: Many will be asking their junior teachers!
 Ask teachers that know you well for your most positive
attributes
 Sometimes a supplementary letter is appropriate
 (athletics, music, arts, community service or work
related letter)
 Counselor Recommendation
 A thank you note is always a nice touch!
The College Essay








Follow directions.(word limit, etc.)
Make sure your essay answers the question.
Be sure that it tells the reader something about you.
Be engaging
Make sure it is coming from you (your voice).
Make revisions.
Proofread and make corrections. (presentation counts)
Seek feedback(your 12th grade English teachers are available
to help you in 12th grade if you make appointments in
advance)
 If you are not funny, this is not the time to try!

Student Responsibilities for Applications
 Some Key points:
 In the senior year, set up your Common Application




account and sign the FERPA. Log onto your Naviance
account and enter your Common Application email address
and then press the prompt to match them.
Review your transcript at the beginning of the senior year.
Obtain and Complete Applications.
Follow directions and know deadlines!
Submit the College Applications Form and Counselor
Questionnaire to your counselor at least two weeks before
deadlines.

 Send standardized scores ACT/SAT/SAT IIs directly from

the testing service.
Send the student portion of the application.
Send signed Early Decision agreement(only if applicable)
Contact schools for auditions/interviews(if applicable)
Art students: prepare portfolio and call to ask how to send

the school psychologist about updating testing
information.

Complete the FAFSA or any financial aid forms that
may be requested from a particular college such as the
CSS Profile or other institutional forms.

 Attend Financial Aid evening in the senior year on calendar
 Federal Aid: Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov after Jan. 1st

of senior year and as close to Jan. 1st as possible.
Colleges now have a net price calculator on their websites
and www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov can give you an estimate of
your estimated family contribution(EFC)
CSS PROFILE: Apply during fall of senior year if college
participates
Ask about any other specific institutional forms by
contacting the Office of Financial Aid at each
college/university
