Household language statistics
— In 9% of GM households there is at least one resident
whose main language is not English:
— 18% in Manchester, 11% in Oldham, 10% in
Rochdale and Bolton, 8% in Salford.
— In 4% of GM households (50,000) no one speaks
English as their first language:
— The rate is significantly higher in Manchester (10%,
21,000 households),4-5% in Oldham, Rochdale,
Bolton and Salford.

— Data show a decrease in the number of Managerial/Director level
jobs in GM – rate of decrease is in line with national trend –
Manchester the only locality to see increase in this category
— Big growth in Professional occupational group, with growth
concentrated in Manchester, Salford, Tameside and Wigan
— Growth in service sector occupations common across GM and in
line with national trends
— Except for Manchester which recorded strong growth, little
growth/decline in numbers of low skill occupational jobs –
elementary, administrative, machine operatives

Industrial profile by GM locality
— Tameside, Wigan, Rochdale, Oldham and Bolton all have high levels of
Manufacturing and Construction employment
— Manchester has one of the lowest percentages (16%) of residents
employed in Wholesale and retail trades.
— Manchester does however have by some distance the largest
Accommodation and food services sector, both in absolute and relative
terms.
— 19% of Trafford residents are employed in skills-intensive industries of
Financial services, and Professional, scientific and technical activities –
twice the percentage recorded in Wigan, Rochdale and Oldham.
— Levels of employment within the three ‘public sector’ industries are broadly
similar across the conurbation, with all 10 localities having between 27-31%
of residents employed in these industries – in line with national figure of
28%.
