lead Europe into the Great War?

Imperialism meant that Europeans were

 Germany: save its status as a great power

 Strain of war effort led to social upheaval
by 1916 (strikes, demonstrations)

British/French offensive
-Nearly 20,000 British killed on day 1
-Around 1 million total casualties
-Result: Allies gained 6-7 miles

offensive to capture city of Verdun
-Similar results to the Somme
-Attrition: “bleed the French white”
