Process of Natural
Selection – Cornell
Notes
Assignment #3
Cornell Notes
Write the underlined yellow
words on the left side and
the definition and
descriptions on the right
side.
At the end of the notes
make a summary.
Overproduction
egg
sac
• Overproduction:
when organisms in a
population produce
more offspring than
their environment can
support.
• Example:
• Tarantula’s egg sac can
hold 500 to 1,000 eggs.
• Some eggs will survive
and develop into adult
spiders and some will not.
Inherited Variation
• Variation:
Differences in a
population of organisms
of the same species.
●
(helpful) variations are
passed to offspring from
their parents through
genes/alleles.
• Example:
• Every individual has its
own combination of traits.
• Each tarantula is similar
but not identical, to its
parents.
Struggle to Survive
(adaptation)
• Adaptation:
An inherited trait that
helps an organism
survive and reproduce
in its environment.
• Example:
• Some tarantulas may have
traits that make it more likely
they will survive.
• A tarantula may be better
able to fight off predators, like
the wasp (pictured on front).
Successful Reproduction
(natural selection)
● Natural Selection:
When organisms with helpful
variations (adaptations) are better
able to survive and reproduce in
their environment.
Large populations have a greater
chance of having traits that allow
survival in a new environment .
Natural Selection
Over time the offspring with
helpful variations increase and
become a larger percentage of
the population.
●
Example:
• Tarantulas best adapted to
their environment are likely to
survive and reproduce.
• The offspring may inherit the
traits that help them survive.
Summary
Write 2 to 3
paragraphs reviewing
the information that
your just wrote.
