Eight Steps
to get you
started
STEP 1
 Define your Goals
 Set a plan and stick to it
 Define exactly WHAT YOU WANT
 Be specific

 Review your Plan
 Go over your notes
 Get others’ input
 Formulate your plan
 Form a committee

 Determine what is needed
 What does the grant provider want?
 Do some research
 Find out what qualifications are necessary

STEP 4
 Locate the grant program
 Find a program that will help make your
plan a reality
 Purchase products/materials
 Contract services/trainings
 Create/start a project
 Subsidize services, programs, etc.

STEP 5
 Do your homework
 Preliminary work to see if it will support:
 The goals for purchasing what is needed
 Determine the purpose:
 -- one-time project
 --sustainability for continuation
 Get necessary forms, determine fees/costs, etc.

STEP 6
 Develop working relationships
 Learn to do this with all people you come in contact
with -- from the beginning to the end of the project:
 Grantor(s)
• Partners
•Businesses
 Sponsors
• Volunteers
• Community

STEP 7
 Submit your Application
 Be sure it is COMPLETE!
 Include a realistic proposal:
 Description of how money will be spent
 List of supplies/equipment necessary
 Estimate of how much the work will cost
 Description of how community will benefit

STEP 8
 Wrap-up the project
 Complete all legal requirements & Paperwork
 Create a schedule & stay on target
 MUST adhere to requirements of the grant
 Keep records of every action
 Take photos as often as possible
