How do students access higher education?
AVID Pre-Conference
AVID Pre-Conference Possible Barriers to College Access
• • • • • •
Communicating college readiness Communicating college needs & preferences Connecting with the right college/university Accessing college admission tests Issues with parental or high school guidance Learning about financial aid and scholarships
AVID Pre-Conference What is it that Universities and Colleges want students to know and be able to do?
Six course units in language, including
four units in
English
emphasizing grammar, composition, and literature, and two units of a
language other than English
.
Three course units of mathematics,
algebra I and II, and geometry, algebra I and II, pre-calculus calculus.
It is recommended that students take a mathematics course in the twelfth grade.
Three laboratory course units in science, including
biological science, chemistry, and physics
Two course units in social studies, including one unit in U.S. history,

A high percentage of colleges use test scores as one factor in the admissions process 81% require or use the ACT and/or the SAT in the process*
*From ACT’s Annual Institutional Data Questionnaire
Testing should be an inclusionary process/factor not an exclusionary practice
AVID Pre-Conference Test Scores, and data should help students achieve the access to college they are seeking.
Provide a holistic view of individual students and groups of students – Measures academic achievement » English, math, reading, science – Career Interest Inventory – Needs Assessment – Plans and Background Information – Intervention Rosters (EXPLORE and PLAN)

AVID Pre-Conference College Readiness Benchmark Scores
•
Minimum ACT test scores required for students to have a high probability of success in credit-bearing college courses
•
Empirically derived based on actual performance of college students
•
Established using data from 98 institutions and over 90,000 students
AVID Pre-Conference
College Readiness Benchmark Scores The minimum score needed on an ACT subject-area test to indicate a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses.

The ACT and Access
• When a student takes the ACT, colleges are able identify and reach out to potential students through: –
ACT Score Reports
(sent by students) –
Educational Opportunity Service
(search) • Colleges are able to facilitate access by using these to connect students with appropriate campus programs and resources
AVID Pre-Conference
Lead With Research
• To disseminate these results to inform current state P-16 alignment efforts • To validate and update the content of our assessment programs
AVID Pre-Conference What Is the ACT National Curriculum Survey
®
?
The ACT National Curriculum Survey is a one-of-a-kind nationwide survey of educational practices and expectations conducted by ACT every 3 to 5 years for the purpose of determining what skills and knowledge are currently being taught, and which are considered important for success at each grade level for college readiness.
Misalignments Between Postsecondary Instructors’ Expectations and High School Teachers’ Evaluations of Student Readiness.

Example: Mathematics College Readiness Standards
AVID Pre-Conference ACT’s College Readiness Standards ™
• Direct link between what students have learned and what they are ready to learn next. • Suggested learning experiences provide links between the Standards in one score range and those in the next (higher) score range. • Ideas for progressing to the next score range demonstrate ways that information learned from standardized test results can be used to inform classroom instruction.

Next Steps
• Identify the individuals who need to see this report • Highlight those students who on first glance might need intervention • Brainstorm ways in which your school can intervene with these students • Consider the variety of ways that students can be college and career ready
AVID Pre-Conference Your students self- reported plans and needs
• What are the educational plans of the majority of your students?
• How does your school encourage and support students’ educational plans?
• What else do you notice?
AVID Pre-Conference The IRSR Report shows you:
• the percentage of your students who selected the correct response to each item.
• the percentage of your students who selected each incorrect response.
• the percentage who did not answer the item. • the average percentage of students who responded correctly to the items in each content area.
AVID Pre-Conference
• Given your curriculum, is the percentage of your report group answering each item correctly and consistent with your expectations? • Is a large percentage of your report group choosing incorrect response options?
