A Team of Indians and Only One Chief
The Role of the Administrator vs. The Role of the
Chairperson/Team
A Mile Wide And An Inch Deep
Understanding what PBS is, is as important as the managerial aspect: DIG DEEP
• Understand that PBS is an ongoing planning and tweaking process
• Implement Tier 1 with fidelity and sustainability
• Recognize what needs to be tweaked and when you are ready to move to the
next tier
***When you have an understanding of the expectations and processes then the
managerial aspect of PBS becomes much easier for all team members.
Know what your resources are:
• Leaders must know the experts you have on your team and what their
abilities are---delegate appropriately
• Know who to call/email to find answers to questions you have
• Money---if needed make a plan as to where and how you are going to get it
and who will be in charge of it
Elephant In The Room
Be open and honest about your current realities
Don’t Beat A Dead Horse
Consensus is Key
• Always keep moving forward---majority rules and move on (Can’t
please everyone all of the time) (Can’t wait for everyone to get on
board)
Blah, Blah, Blah
Eliminate the same old thing---different day attitude
• Make the meetings meaningful and timely
• Have the agenda prepared
• Hold important discussions—input from all/everyone has an opinion
and should be heard
• Make a decision and move on (Table very little---when more
information is needed)
• Everyone has a voice end everyone is heard
• Does your meeting have a purpose and do
you accomplish that purpose?
Examples Of The Dysfunction
• Be Careful What You Suggest And How You Suggest It
• Arguments and disagreements “They are going to happen!”
• Lack of Communication---people are going to drop the ball
occasionally
• No progress---majority rules---keep moving
forward
• Chaos---get everyone on the same page or
at least back in the same book
***Keep in mind that effective, strong leaders
are able to refocus a team and get the
team going again.
Data Rich, Information Poor
• “Own” your data before presenting information
• Try to eliminate any confusion of those who are not
on the team
• The leaders must clearly understand the data and
present it in a way that is understandable for all
faculty members (not just the BIG 5—it’s whatever
you give to the faculty)
• Leaders must decide what information to give to the
staff (don’t overwhelm them, break it down into
small manageable parts)
Light At The End Of The Tunnel
Once your planning is finished and
implementation with fidelity occurs, it will
just be the way you do business!
Light At The End Of The Tunnel
Rely on the processes you have established:
• Don’t change mid-stream (give the process a year to work then tweak)
• After you teach students don’t keep changing, you will never establish a routine
for that year (you will definitely tweak things yearly)
Use your action plan as a checklist to guide you:
• Planning year is like a checklist---you have to get numerous items completed and
make many decisions
• After planning year your action plan guides you and helps you to sustain your tiers
Check your responsibilities!:
• After every meeting you should make sure everyone on your team knows what
their jobs are
• Read the meeting notes/each person states what they will accomplish by the
assigned due date
Thank you for attending
