Who was responsible
for the death of Jesus?
Lesson Five:
Jesus, the Willing
Volunteer
John 10:17-18 (ESV)
17 For this reason the Father loves
me, because I lay down my life
that I may take it up again.
18 No one takes it from me, but
I lay it down of my own accord.
I have authority to lay it down, and
I have authority to take it up again.
This charge I have received from
my Father."
Luke 4:28-30 (ESV)
28 When they heard these things,
all in the synagogue were filled
with wrath. 29 And they rose up
and drove him out of the town and
brought him to the brow of the hill
on which their town was built,
so that they could throw him down
the cliff. 30 But passing through
their midst, he went away.
John 7:28-30 (ESV)
28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in
the temple, "You know me, and you
know where I come from? But I have
not come of my own accord. He who
sent me is true, and him you do not
know. 29 I know him, for I come from
him, and he sent me." 30 So they were
seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a
hand on him, because his hour had
not yet come.
Luke 9:51 (NKJV)
Now it came to pass,
when the time had come
for Him to be received up,
that He steadfastly set His face
to go to Jerusalem.
John 13:1 (NKJV)
Now before the Feast of the
Passover, when Jesus knew
that His hour had come
that He should depart from this
world to the Father, having loved
His own who were in the world,
He loved them to the end.
Matthew 26:50b-54 V)
50 … Then they came up and
laid hands on Jesus and seized him.
51 And behold, one of those who
were with Jesus stretched out his hand and
drew his sword and struck the servant of the
high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus
said to him, "Put your sword back into its
place. For all who take the sword will perish
by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot
appeal to my Father, and he will at once send
me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 But how then should the Scriptures be
fulfilled, that it must be so?"
John 5:30 (NKJV)
I can of Myself do nothing.
As I hear, I judge; and My
judgment is righteous, because
I do not seek My own will but the
will of the Father who sent Me.
John 6:38 (NKJV)
For I have come down from
heaven, not to do My own will,
but the will of Him who sent Me.
John 10:30 (NKJV)
“I and My Father are one.”
John 14:9 (NKJV)
Jesus said to him,
"Have I been with you so long,
and yet you have not known Me,
Philip? He who has seen Me has
seen the Father; so how can you
say, 'Show us the Father'?
John 12:27-28 (NKJV)
27 "Now My soul is troubled, and
what shall I say? 'Father, save Me
from this hour'? But for this
purpose I came to this hour.
28 Father, glorify Your name."
John 17:1-3 (NASB)
1 These things Jesus spoke; and lifting up
His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the
hour has come; glorify Thy Son, that the
Son may glorify Thee, 2 even as Thou
gavest Him authority over all mankind,
that to all whom Thou hast given Him, He
may give eternal life. 3 "And this is eternal
life, that they may know Thee, the only true
God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast
sent.
Isaiah 53:9-11 (NKJV)
9 And they made His grave with the wicked —
but with the rich at His death, because He had
done no violence, nor was any deceit in His
mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise
Him; He has put Him to grief. When You
make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see
His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the
pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be
satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous
Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear
their iniquities.
John 19:10-11 (ESV)
10 So Pilate said to him, "You will not
speak to me? Do you not know that I
have authority to release you and
authority to crucify you?" 11 Jesus
answered him, "You would have no
authority over me at all unless it had
been given you from above. Therefore
he who delivered me over to you has
the greater sin."
Romans 8:32 (NASB)
He who did not spare His own
Son, but delivered Him up for us
all, how will He not also with Him
freely give us all things?
The decision to die
was always
Jesus' choice to make.
Matthew 26:36-39 (ESV)
36 Then Jesus went with them to a
place called Gethsemane, and he said to
his disciples, "Sit here, while I go over
there and pray." 37 And taking with
him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee,
he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
38 Then he said to them, "My soul is very
sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and
watch with me." 39 And going a little farther
he fell on his face and prayed, saying,
"My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass
from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you
will."
Matthew 26:40-44 (ESV)
40 And he came to the disciples and
found them sleeping. And he said to
Peter, "So, could you not watch with
me one hour? 41 Watch and pray
that you may not enter into temptation.
The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is
weak." 42 Again, for the second time, he went
away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass
unless I drink it, your will be done."
43 And again he came and found them sleeping,
for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them
again, he went away and prayed for the third
time, saying the same words again.
Matthew 26:45-46
45 Then he came to the
disciples and said to them,
"Sleep and take your rest
later on. See, the hour is at
hand, and the Son of Man is
betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Rise, let us be going; see, my
betrayer is at hand."
Luke 23:46 (NASB)
And Jesus, crying out
with a loud voice, said,
"Father, into Thy hands
I commit My spirit." And having
said this, He breathed His last.
John 10:11 (ESV)
I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd lays down
his life for the sheep.
Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)
I have been crucified with
Christ; it is no longer I who
live, but Christ lives in me;
and the life which I now live in
the flesh I live by faith in
the Son of God, who loved me
and gave Himself for me.
Revelation 1:5 (NKJV)
And from Jesus Christ,
the faithful witness, the firstborn
from the dead, and the ruler over
the kings of the earth.
To Him who loved us and
washed us from our sins in His
own blood.
Mark 10:45 (NKJV)
For even the Son of Man
did not come to be served,
but to serve, and to give His life
a ransom for many.
John 15:13 (NKJV)
Greater love has no one than
this, than to lay down one's life
for his friends.
