The Body
Growth and Development

The Nervous System
Carries messages to and from
the brain and all other parts of
the body and helps cause our
reflexes
Brain: control center of the body
Spinal Cord: carries messages between the brain
and the body
Nerve Cells: a small unit of the nervous system
The Cardiovascular System
Moves nutrients, hormones, and
gases throughout the body
Blood: carries nutrients, oxygen and other things to
cells
Blood Vessels: tubes that carry blood throughout
the body
Heart: muscle that pumps blood throughout the
body
The Immune System
Removes bad organisms from
the blood and fights sickness
Lymph Node: structure that kills sickness
Spleen: filters bad things from the blood
Thymus Gland: causes white blood cells to become
T-cells that kill off sickness
The Respiratory System
Provides body cells with oxygen
and removes carbon dioxide
Trachea: tube where air moves to the lungs
Bronchi: two tubes that air goes through after the
trachea to the lungs
Lungs: main organs
Cilia: smalls hairs that remove dust from the air we
breath
The Muscular System
Consists of muscles that provide
motion and maintain posture
Voluntary Muscles: muscles you can control
Arms, legs
Involuntary Muscles: muscles you cant control
stomach, lungs
The Skeletal System
Serves as the frame of your body,
protects your organs, and works
with muscles so you can move!
Bones: hard material of the skeletal system
Bone Marrow: the tissue inside of your bones
Cartilage: tissue at the end of your bones that helps connect
some bones
Ligaments: tough fiber that connects some bones
Joints: where two bones meet
