Notes from the Nurse

A few things to know

A district Nurse will be camping with us. She is available 24/7 to make cabin calls or available at our care station. Each teacher will carry a first aid pack, this pack only contains alcohol swabs, bandages, and few other things for minor scraped knees and boo boos.

Medical Paperwork

Each student going to camp will have a camp health form that must be filled out, each area must have a parent signature on it.

There are 2 areas that require a parent signature. The first one is on page 2 that gives the school and any medical personnel permission to treat your student if they get injured or become ill. The second one is on page 3. This gives the nurse permission to treat your student with the medications that are listed on that page. If you do not want your child to have any of those medications make sure and initial beside each one that you do not want them to have. You only initial if you do not want your child to have that medication.

Messages about Medications

1. Prescription medication and over-the-counter medication will require a physician’s written order.

2. All medications and physicians orders must be turned in two weeks prior to the start of camp. (The only exception is new physicians orders for antibiotics). Please understand we would need to know this new information as soon as possible. Try not to wait till the day before or the day we leave for camp to give this information to the nurse.

3. Parent signature must be obtained to give the child their medication.

4. Vitamins or non- necessary medications should not be given at camp. This will help reduce the amount of medications that the nurse will be giving.

Medications Continued

5. Prescription medications, including inhalers, must have a pharmacy label that contains the name of the student, dosage instructions, etc. and this must match physicians orders.

6. Only send the amount of medication your child will need for camp.

7. If the medication bottles do not have a properly fixed label, or no physician orders are received, the medication will not be accepted.

8. Put your child’s medication in a Ziploc bag, large enough to fit all their medications, label the bag with your child’s first and last name and place the physician orders inside the bag. Then turn this information in all together to the school nurse.

9. When camp is over, please remember if you have any medications left over to pick them up from the nurse

Special Considerations: Bed Wetting 1.

If your child wets the bed please let the school nurse know

.

2. Take a pull-up and place in Walmart bag. (You will have 2 bags and a pull up in each bag) 3. Place the bags at the bottom of your child’s sleeping bag 4. Tell your child the pull-ups are there 5. Explain to the child that when they get in their sleeping bag at night, they slip the pull-up on, when they wake up in the morning, they will take the empty Walmart bag into the restroom with them, they will put the used pull up in the bag and throw the bag away.

6. Please inform your child that if their sleeping bag is wet, they need to let the teacher or counselor of their cabin know, so that the items that are wet can be laundered. (Teachers are very discreet they will not remove the items with other children in the cabins. They will wait till everyone has left to go to breakfast or activities for the day).

Special Considerations : Diabetic Care

1. Staff will be trained in Diabetic Care 2. Each area that the student will be a snack treatment bag should be available. Also, have the student carry one with them. (these items should be supplied by the parent). The school nurse will let you know how many bags will be needed.

3. Student should carry their glucometer.

4. Student will test blood glucose levels as directed by MD, or when student c/o of hyper or hypo symptoms 5. When giving bedtime medication have student test and dose as directed by MD. Make sure student takes glucometer back to cabin with them 6. If student needs to test at night after lights out, have them test and the adult in the cabin can radio the nurse with numbers. The nurse will direct the teacher/adult in the cabin.

Special Considerations: Homesickness

Homesickness: If your child is home sick we really try to keep them busy. If you get them involved in activities, the less they think about home.
