Dibrugarh University : A Profile



Dibrugarh University, the easternmost State University
of India, is celebrating its Golden Jubilee Year in 20142015.
The University is located in a campus of 203 hectares
out of which 74.3 hectares are under tea plantation.
The district of Dibrugarh is well known for its vast
treasure of minerals (including oil and natural gas and
coal), flora and fauna and largest concentration of tea
plantations.
It is a teaching-cum-affiliating University with 17
Departments, One Institute, 21Centres for Studies
under Five Schools:
School of Humanities and Social Science
School of Science and Engineering
School of Commerce and Management Science
School of Education
School of Earth, Atmospheric Science, Environment
and Energy
Besides, there are 171 affiliated colleges offering
programmes in Arts, Science, Commerce, Management,
Engineering and other disciplines.
Out of these, one college is recognized as Autonomous
College and five colleges are recognized as Community
Colleges.







Dibrugarh University has introduced the Semester System in the Under
graduate Programmes in 2011-2012 Academic Session. The new system
incorporated the following components in the light of the Skill Oriented
Education:
a. Computer skills
b. Communication Skill
c. Multi-disciplinary Course
d. Skill based Courses
The Skill Based Courses:

Courses introduced in the 5th and 6th Semester BA and
B.Sc. Programmes.

These are designed to provide area specific skill oriented
knowledge within the basic degree framework.

These are designed for developing professional skills and
aptitude for entrepreneurship.

Industry-academia interface has been undertaken in
designing and conducting some of the courses.

Courses are based on local demand and supply and
strength of the colleges

Other Initiatives
A Centre for Technology Innovation and
Incubation has been established to inspire, guide
and train the budding scientists for innovation
and creativity.
 Two periphery villages have been adopted as
Associated villages. The youths of these villages
have been provided different skill development
training in the field of welding, drilling, pottery,
computer repairing etc.

Plan of Action for the Days Ahead
Objectives:
1. To identify different sectors in which shortterm modular skill development
programmes can be conducted to cater the
local as well as the global needs.
2. To prepare skilled workforce for fulfilling
local as well as global needs.
3. To tap the local talents and add value to
their potentiality with proper academic
orientation.
 To
make an inventory of resources of
indigenous knowledge in the periphery of
Dibrugarh University.
In order to realize these objectives, the
following programme of action shall be
undertaken:
1. A thorough survey of the Government, NGO and
all other unorganized skill service providers with
whom the University may potentially collaborate.
2. Preparation of different skill development modular
programmes with multiple entry and exit
provisions.
3. Formation of a human resource pool for
executing the works related to skill
development.
4. Preparation of a team of trainers for
different skill development courses.
5. Collaboration with other certifying
bodies for joint-certification.

Effort has been initiated to introduce skill
development programmes in the following
areas:
Wildlife photography,
Engine testing,
Vehicle quality
Renewable energy
Building technology
Waste management
Disaster management
Rain water harvesting
