Points of Interest
Your principal will evaluate you on the Iowa
Teaching Standards. By using the webpage
below... under Additional Information… you will
find a copy of the Iowa Teaching Standards.
http://www.boee.iowa.gov/index.html
What does your district want?
There is no “set” way of showing evidence of the
Iowa Teaching Standards. It varies from district
to district and sometimes there are different
expectations between buildings in the same
district. Ask your principal specifically what you
will need.
Your evaluator will determine if you have met
the Iowa teaching standards and thus are
eligible for a standard license or
if you will be recommended for
a third year conditional license
before a licensure decision is made.
The Board of Educational Examiners defines a
year of teaching experience as 160 days. Thus if
you have completed 160 days in your second
year of experience and have been
comprehensively evaluated, you may apply for
your standard license.
Common Question
My Initial License expires this year; what do I
have to do to renew it? See the next 3 slides.
• if you have two years of teaching experience
• have been teaching in an Iowa public school
• have completed a mentoring and induction
program
• have met the Iowa Teaching Standards;
• have your principal sign the application for
conversion of the Initial License to the
Standard License and mail it to our office with
the fee. $85.00. Must download and mail.
If you have met all other requirements for your
Standard License, but don’t yet have two years
of teaching experience (or three years in a nonpublic school) apply for a one year extension of
your Initial License and mail it to our office with
the fee. $85.00. Must download and mail.
If you have been teaching but are more than a
year away from being able to apply for your
Standard License, apply to renew your Initial
License and mail it to our office with the fee.
$85.00. Must download and mail.
Common Questions
What if my license expires before I receive my
renewed license in the mail?
• As long as your complete application is in our
office by the expiration date of the license,
your application is considered to be on time
and you may legally continue to teach, and no
late fee will be assessed.
I just got my new license back. I had requested
a name change. Why wasn’t my name changed
on my license?
In order to change your name on your teaching license, we need some sort of legal
proof of the name change. A photocopy of the appropriate document (marriage
certificate, divorce decree, etc.) will be sufficient.
If you provide this documentation within thirty days of the printing of your license, we
will change the name and print a new license for you at no charge. Beyond that date,
you can submit verification of name change, and we will be happy to make the change
that will appear on future licenses; there is a charge only if you ask for an updated
copy of the license.
All fees are non-refundable. Be sure you check
off everything you need to send in!
