Classroom management is a term that is used to describe various practices employed by teachers to make sure that the behavior of the students does not disrupt or interfere with lesson plans. Classroom management, however, is important in all classroom settings, even settings that are largely populated by ADULTS. Despite the age of the students in a given group, classroom management is intended to maintain an environment that is conducive to instruction and learning. There are a number of ways that this can be done. Most methods of classroom management can be divided into two categories. One includes methods for preventing disruptive behavior in the classroom. Another includes methods for dealing with disruptive behavior when it occurs in a classroom setting. They have a set of routines and procedures that they teach students. They maximize the classroom’s physical space to facilitate easy teacher movement and proximity, as well as student movement and transitions. They plan and display well. They deal with interruptions effectively and efficiently. They encourage and nurture a sense of community, respect, and personal relationships. They have a collection of corrective consequences for mild misbehaviour. They have a repertoire of options for dealing with discipline problems. They know when to bend the rules and when not to. Keys to Classroom Management Effective classroom managers prevent problems rather that handle them after they occur. Management and instruction are integrally related. Students are active participants in the learning environment “Don't”s Do not use vague rules; Do not have rules that you are unwilling to enforce; Do not ignore student behaviors that violate school or classroom rules (they will not go away); Do not engage in ambiguous or inconsistent treatment of misbehavior; Do not use overly harsh or embarrassing punishments or punishments delivered without accompanying support; Do not use corporal punishment; Avoid out-of-school suspension whenever possible Do not try to solve problems alone if you have serious concerns about a student. Classroom management is very important for every class. Here are some suggestions for classroom management: • Get silence before you start explaining something, • Know and use students’ names, • Walk around the classroom, do not just stand and sit at the front, • Make sure the instructions are clear, • Prepare additional materials, • Choose topics that are interesting for the students, • Use a variety of different techniques to teach the subject, • Be friendly to the students, • Scan the room to ensure that all students understand and work on the assigned tasks.
