WESTERN POWERS RULE SOUTHEAST ASIA

PACIFIC RIM

  Pacific Rim: the countries that border the Pacific Ocean Major plantation focus for the Pacific lands:  sugar cane       Coffee Cocoa Rubber Coconuts Bananas Pineapple

PACIFIC RIM

 The Dutch eventually gained control of Indonesia.

 The British encouraged Chinese to move to Malaysia for jobs. Soon the native Malays were in the minority and conflict broke out.

LIVES OF NATIVES

 Education, health, and sanitation improved for the native inhabitants.

 When people migrated to work on plantations in SE Asia it changed the cultural and racial makeup of the area.

SIAM

 Siam kept its own power by acting as a neutral between France and Great Britain.

 It also modernized itself by starting schools, reforming the legal system, and reorganizing government.

US & THE PACIFIC

 The US acquired the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guan as a result of the Spanish-American war.

 The US built roads, railroads, hospitals, and schools in the Philippines.

HAWAII

 America became interested in Hawaii because of the sugar cane crops.  American businessmen overthrew Queen Liliuokalani and her monarchy.
