Step 2 Environmental Review
Thus we defined the Eco-school theme –
“Transport”:
– Biofuel
– Eco-car
What did we do?
Step 2 Environmental Review
The basic tasks and directions of work:
 Toxic emissions evaluation of automobiles of the
Branch’s teachers and students.
 Video and text analysis on how biofuels are used in
Russia and abroad.
 Study of the biofuel usage in Kirov.
Step 3 Action Plan
1. Composing a questionnaire for toxic exhaust evaluation.
2. Questioning of teachers and students of the Branch.
3. Studying mass-media reports, scientific articles and video
materials on biofuel usage abroad, in Russia and in Kirov.
4. Round-table conversation with students about toxic
exhaust influence on the environment and biofuel usage
as well (with watching videoclips).
5. Writing the scientific articles about biofuels for internal
combustion engine.
6. Eco-school section at the summer scientific conference.
Step 4 Monitoring and Evaluation
The questionnaire for toxic
automobile exhaust
evaluation (questioning was
fulfilled by students

Scientific conference
Every summer there is the scientific conference
“Current Problems of Humanitarian, Economic and Technical
Sciences“ in the Branch. Lecturers and students of MSIU and other
universities of Kirov, post-graduate students and specialists take
part in the conference.
In 2013 in the 7th issue of Proceedings of the conference the
results of eco-school work were published, and among them are
students’ 6 articles devoted to alternative fuels.
Step 5 Curriculum Work
Environmental problems are studied in the following disciplines:
 Ecology
 Foreign Language
 Philosophy
 Social Science
 Concepts of Modern Natural Science
 Theory of Automobile
 Heat Engines and Power Units
 Operational Materials
What did we do?
Step 6 Informing and Involving
1. Information about the “Eco-Schools” programme and the
conference at the meetings of the Academic Council and the
stand of the Branch
2. Information at our site (http://krfmsiu.ru/content/view/51/64/)
3. Registration at the “Eco-Schools” site (www.eco-schools.org
and www.eco-schools-hsbc.org)
4. Information about the main directions of our work at the site of
Kirov State Universal Scientific Library named after A. Herzen
(http://www.herzenlib.ru/ecology/ecology_partnership/detail.php
?CODE=ek_part_obrazovanie)
What did we do?
Step 6 Informing and Involving
Step 6
5. Ongoing scientific cooperation programme “Biofuel for
Diesel Engine” with Belorus State Agricultural Academy
(Gorki, the Republic Belarus) and Podolskiy State
Technical University (Kamenets-Podolskiy, Ukraine).
In 2012 docent S. Plotnikov defended the doctoral thesis “Diesel engine
uprating by means of creating new alternative fuels and improving fuelinjection equipment”; student V. Zagrebin under guidance of docents
S. Plotnikov, Sh. Buzikov applied for the patent on new fuel emulsion for
ICE. In 2013 V. Zagrebin with his scientific advisor S. Plotnikov
published an article at the “International Student Science Forum” (URL:
www.scienceforum.ru/2013/69/3497)
Step 6 Involving the University
Community and Authorities
About 200 students and 30 teachers of the Branch took part in
the questioning (see slide 15). 43 students participated in the
conversation (slide 17) and scientific conference (slide 30). All 400
students and 30 teachers were being informed of the Programme
“Eco-Schools” via meetings and site. Everyone can get access to
the hottest information (text and video) about biofuel usage at
“Eco-School” page of the Branch’s site. The materials are being
collected by students – members of the Eco-School Committee.
We didn’t feel any difficulties when involving the university
community because everyone understands, “Concern for ecology
is concern for the future!” However we couldn’t get any financial or
moral encouragement from Kirov authorities. The imperfection of
Russia’s laws in ethanol production, oil magnates’ monopoly don’t
allow to implement wide biofuel research and mass production.

ENVIRONMENTAL
THINKING
Imagine: “the Earth”, a small ship,
Маленький корабль по имени "Земля"
Through Nothing to Nowhere goes.
Мчится сквозь Ничто и, в общем, в Никуда.
The crew has so little of mind
Больше бы ума команде корабля,
To see how the trouble is close.
Чтобы осознать, что близится беда.
The sages were surely right:
Правы мудрецы – чужой прокол не впрок.
“Learn wisdom by follies of others.”
Собственный финал готовят чудаки,
We’re living the savvy despite,
Предками не раз полученный урок
The lessons do not benefit us.
Забывают вновь, рассудку вопреки.
We’re thinking too much of ourselves,
Снова мнят себя творения венцом,
We drive and pollute, living fast.
Выжигая мир, как пачку сигарет,
We’re hastening to afterworld,
И в который раз на рандеву с Творцом
Disdaining all bans. Please, avast!
Общество спешит, презрев любой запрет.

Green Flag Award
On 23 October the Branch received the Green Flag.
The meeting was held in Kirov State Universal
Scientific Library named after A. Herzen
Prospects of work
What are we to do this year?
1. Continue studying environmental issues in different
disciplines
2. Engaging students in scientific work devoted to toxic
emissions of internal combustion engines when working
on petrol, diesel and biofuel
3. Evaluation of biofuel influence upon the Kirov region
environment
4. Preparation of recommendations on biofuel application for
the interested representatives of Kirov authority,
automakers and ordinary drivers
Support and material resources
What do we need for going on?
To continue working and implement results, our Eco-school
needs:
а) colleagues-adherents from other universities, research
institutes, specialists of biomonitoring and chemical analysis;
b) interested sponsors;
c) purchase of the equipment for rig testing engines when
working on biofuel;
d) creating the specialized laboratory for experimental studies.
