The NSAA uses enrollment figures for grades 9-11 of the current school year to
establish classifications for the next season. The figures are usually released
sometime around December.
•
Elkhorn South is at the Top of Class B / Bottom of Class A depending on what sport
OR what schools are combining in a sport.
•
Platteview is at the Top of Class C / Bottom of Class B depending on what sport OR
what schools are combining in a sport.

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
• 80% of BHS students were involved in at least one
activity this past year.
• Over 40% are participating in 2 or more activities.
• Band (62), Chorus (93), Volleyball (35), Baseball
(42), Boys Basketball(38) & Football (61) were the
highest involved activities.
• Involvement increased almost 13% from 2012-13
to 2013-14 (440 to 496).
• Attrition rate for all activities was 5.4% (496 to
469).
NSAA ELIGIBILITY
• Enrolling as a freshman establishes your
eligibility at your “home school.”
• Must have passed 20 hours (4 classes) the
previous semester & be currently enrolled in 4
classes (20 hours) to participate.
• 8 semesters to compete during High School.
• 19 years old on or after August 1 = INELIGIBLE.
TRANSFERS & OPTION ENROLLMENT
• Bennington does not accept Option or Open
Enrollment students due to being at operating
capacity for the district.
• March 15th is the deadline to submit Learning
Community / Open Enrollment Paperwork.
• May 1st is the NSAA deadline for eligibility
declarations by all schools.
• UNDUE INFLUENCE in the NSAA & EMC.
CONCUSSIONS & IMPACT TESTS
• LB 260 – The Concussion Awareness Act.
Effective July 2012; holds organizations
accountable for the education, diagnosis &
treatment of individuals believed to have
suffered a concussion.
• IMPACT TEST – Establishes a baseline of
cognitive operations involving reaction times,
memory & recognition.
RETURN TO PLAY & LEARN
• Athlete is diagnosed with a concussion…
– Removed from activity, parents notified & referral
form(s) sent home with athlete.
– Evaluated by a licensed health care professional.
– Receive clearance to return to activity
participation by the LHCP.
– Complete the return to play progression.
– Parent/Guardian submits the signed clearance
form to the school.
PHYSICAL EXAMS
• NSAA Bylaw 3.4: Each student who expects to
participate in athletic contests shall present
the school with certification that he/she is
physically fit to participate on an annual basis.
– Any physical taken May 1st or after will be
considered part of summer vacation.
– Recommended after Memorial weekend.
– Not required for Summer camps or leagues.
INSURANCE
• Family Insurance is considered the primary
source of care in the event of an injury that
results in medical treatment.
– Additional insurance is available (SAR)
• NSAA provides catastrophic coverage for grades
9-12, BPS has purchased coverage for grades 7 &
8.
– Excess medical, dental, rehab or custodial care.
– Loss of life, long term disability, Post-incident Crisis.

COACHES & SPONSORS
• Proactive Communication regarding
expectations, schedules, conflicts & team
activities.
• Appropriate Topics: Philosophy, Rules &

Logistical Questions (departure, return,
release to parent).
• Off Limits: Playing Time, Game Management,
Position Assignment.
MORE COACHES
• Evaluated on an annual basis: Professionalism,
Organization/Management, Program
Development & Coaching Performance.
• Contacting Coaches
– Consider that there is another side to the story.
– 24 hours after a game.
– Unsatisfied? Contact the Head Coach or AD.
• Tasked with maximizing the potential of the
team while developing individuals.
SPORTSMANSHIP
• This includes the parents, relatives and
patrons that attend contests.
– Abusive or Vulgar language towards coaches or
officials.
– Gestures or Constant screaming during a contest.
– Confrontational and/or Emotionally Unstable.
– Intoxicated / Under the Influence of Alcohol
and/or Drugs.
FROM THE ATHLETES
• Screaming at the Officials.
• Constantly yelling at players, coaches, officials.
• Stay away from the dugouts, sidelines, team
entries & locker rooms.
• Support the coach & support my teammates.
• Not really interested in immediate analysis.
• Don’t go behind my back. Help me be
independent.
DATES TO REMEMBER
• ACT DATES: 9/13 (SB & VB), 10/25 (State
Marching Band), 12/13 (WR & BB), 2/7, 4/18
& 6/13.
• December 24-28 is the mandatory NSAA
Moratorium.
• Homecoming Dance is October 11, 2014.
• Prom is April 11, 2015.
College Eligibility
• Must register with www.ncaaclearinghouse.net and/or
www.playnaia.org
• This is done after the completion of Junior Year.
• Set up separate accounts – use the athlete’s e-mail
accounts / information
• $70 for each registration ($140 total)
• ACT / SAT scores must come directly from the testing
site.
• Print off transcript request form from the account and
turn it into the Guidance Office.
• It is an on-going PROCESS that takes weeks (not a day).
COLLEGE SIGNINGS
• Division I & II have “Signing Days” and/or
“Signing Periods” for their respective sports.
• Division III & NAIA schools do not have
“Signing Days.”
• Signing Celebration will take place in May.
• Contact Mr. Lamberty or Mr. Rischling if you
would like to be part of the this event.

athletic program success – we want you at the
games.
• REMEMBER – it is no longer your opportunity
to prove yourself to others.
• Be visible, be a resource, support your child,
support the coach & BE POSITIVE.
FINAL THOUGHTS
• Protect your child’s eligibility – check with the
school before participating in non-sanctioned
NSAA events.
• Everyone’s experience is different when it
comes to Activities & Athletics.
• In competition there will be winners & losers,
highs & lows, achievements &
disappointments – help our kids handle it.
