Mercutio
Although a minor character Mercutio plays an important role in the play.
He is portrayed as having teenage tendencies, thinking irrational and making
temperamental actions, and is expressed as a fun individual from his use
sarcasim and jokes.
'Prince of cats' and 'rat catcher' - Mercutio
(Act 3, Scene 1)
'Make it to word and a blow' - Mercutio
(Act 3, scene 1)
Mercutio also shows a sense of loyalty towards Romeo and the Montague side
of the feud, as he fronts up to Tybalt, defending Romeo. Tybalt and Mercutio
have conflicts between each other as they are portrayed as very different
characters, with contradicting personalities.

for the rest of the events in the play taking place and leading to the death of
the titular characters.

Differences between characters
. Mercutio and Tybalt are very different characters. Tybalt is very short
tempered and takes most situations in life too seriously. Whilst Mercutio has a
more carefree and playful attitude to just about everything.
'If love be rough with you, be rough with love"-Mercutio (Act 1, scene 4)
'...By the stock and honour of my kin''- Tybalt (Act 1, scene 5)
'A villian that has come hither in spite'- Tybalt (Act 1, Scene 5)
Reasons why Mercutio hates Tybalt
Mercutio is shown to strongly dislike Tybalt as when he was brought up in Act 2
Scene 1, Mercutio is quick to insult him
Another reason Mercutio may hate Tybalt is because of his loyalty to Romeo
and the Montagues. Mercutio feels obliged to fight back to Tybalt after he had
directed a 'death threat' towards Romeo as well as causing trouble with
Mercutio before hand. This hatred towards Tybalt had gradually built up in this
scene, until a point were both eventually die.
