Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Conclusions: Results from this study indicate that ACT might be a valuable alternative in the
rehabilitation for women on long-term sick leave.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare
the effects of an ACT intervention for women on
long-term sick leave in combination with a
employability rehabilitation program with only a

Results: There were significant
interaction effects where ACT participants
improved from pre-treatment to 1 year
follow-up on self-rated depressive
symptoms (p=.013 anxiety (p=.004), and
values-based living (p=.022).

Design: The study is a randomised
controlled design with repeated measures
(n=182). Women on long-term sick leave
due to psychological ill health and/or longterm pain were randomised to one of two
conditions: 1) Individualised ACT- treatment
by a psychologist (ACT) 2) Treatment As
Usual (TAU).

This study is based on a project named
Vitalis. Vitalis was carried out in
collaboration between the Uppsala
University Hospital, the National Insurance
Office, the Employment Office in Uppsala,
Uppsala County municipalities, Uppsala
University and the Organization for
financial coordination in Uppsala county,
Sweden.
In the original study a third condition with
multimodal treatment was included.
