Elm Park Primary School KS2 SATS 2014 Parents’ Information Thursday 24th April 2014 KS2 SATS – 12th May – 15th May 2014 SATS Week Timetable Monday 12th May Tuesday 13th May Wednesday 14th May Thursday 15th May Reading Test 45 minutes (plus 15 minutes reading time) Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test 45 mins Mental Maths Test 20 minutes Maths Test B 45 minutes Level 6 Reading Level 6 Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Maths Paper A 45 mins Level 6 Maths papers A and B There is no longer a Science SAT. Friday 17th May Explaining the SATS Levels Level 3: Below the nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 4: The nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 5: Above the nationally expected level for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 6: Most able pupils nationally At school, we also use sub-levels as a, b or c (a being the highest). Eg. A level 4c is a low level 4, a 4b is a secure level 4 and a 4a is a high level 4. Numeracy Tests There are three tests:- • The mental test (20%) • Paper A -no calculator allowed (40%) • Paper B – no calculator allowed (40%) The tests cover Levels 3-5 • The first questions in the paper are generally Level 3 questions, moving on to Level 4, with the more challenging questions at the end of the papers targeted at Level 5. Mental test Some examples of past papers showing the types of question the children are expected to answer at each level. The Literacy Tests • Reading- 50 marks • Spelling 20 marks • Punctuation and Grammar 50 marks Separate levels for Reading, SPAG and Writing are awarded. No overall level for Literacy as there has been in previous years. Reading Some questions will ask the children to find answers directly from the reading booklets they are given. Others will require the children to deduce answers by using words or phrases as evidence. Some questions will ask the children to evaluate what they have read, again using the text to back up their answers. KS2 SATS - May 2011 Spelling The spelling test carries a possible 20 marks. The spelling words are tested within the context of a passage of text. As the passage is read out to the children, they fill in the correct spellings on their copy of the text. Changes to Writing tests 2014 •Teacher assessment for writing submitted as final mark. • Some schools may be externally moderated What will happen to my child’s SATs scores? • You will be informed of your child’s SATs level in the school report. • We will discuss the child’s results with them that day – gives them some time to prepare their excuses! • Teacher Assessments and grades passed onto Secondary Schools How you can support your child at home: • • • • Sensible bedtime Healthy diet – eat breakfast Drink plenty of water at home and school. Encourage your child positively, without putting too much pressure on him/her. • Support with homework – provide a quiet place for work, share the targets, refer to the study guides you bought/loaned • Use revision guides and websites to support your child’s learning. • Read with your child, discussing the content and choice of words the author has made. Ask your child questions about their reading, encouraging them to identify words or phrases to back up their answers.
