English Tests

English is split into 3 different areas:
Reading Comprehension
 Writing (includes handwriting)
 Spelling
 The Reading and Writing tests are
equally weighted.

English Comprehension
(Reading Test)

15 minutes to read a text.
45 minutes to answer questions.
Test carries 50 marks
Children can refer back to the text.
Test focuses on several different types of
text.
Reading for understanding is essential.
Children will be required to refer to text to
justify their responses.

Writing Tests
Two tests (long and short).
 No choice of writing task.
 Long Test 45 minutes (inc. planning).
 Short Test 20 minutes (inc. planning).
 Sentence structure, punctuation and
text organisation are very important.
 Imaginative, interesting texts which
grab the reader are essential.
 Handwriting assessed in the longer
writing test.

Longer Task Example
Biography
The task provides information about a
fictional character. The children are
required to use the information to write
a biographical piece, using the
appropriate features, language,
sentence structure and punctuation.

Memories of the School Year

The task asks the children to imagine
the class is making a book of memories
of the year at school. Everyone in the
class will write a page of the book
about their final year. Again prompts
are provided and the children have to
produce three ‘chunky’ paragraphs in 20
minutes. Again, language, sentence
structure and punctuation are
Shorter Writing Task Example
Spelling Test
Within a text.
 Fill in the missing gaps.
 20 spellings.
 Marks added to the overall writing
score.
 Only contributes at best 14% to the
writing score.


Mathematics Test Papers

There are three test papers:
Paper A which lasts 45 minutes and carries 40
marks (Non-calculator).
Paper B which lasts 45 minutes and carries 40
marks (Calculator allowed).
Mental maths test which lasts approx 20
minutes and carries 20 marks.
Questions will test all areas but now focus an
application, reasoning and problem solving.
Equipment Needed

All equipment needed for these tests
will be provided by the school. It
changes each year according to the
requirements of the questions.
