Indeed my Heritage is Beautiful To Me
(Psalm 16:6b)
Acts 19:1-7
It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul
passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus,
and found some disciples. He said to them, "Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said
to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a
Holy Spirit." And he said, "Into what then were you
baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism." Paul
said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance,
telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after
him, that is, in Jesus.“ When they heard this, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul
had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on
them, and they began speaking with tongues and
prophesying. There were in all about twelve men.

Instruction for the Church
Paul Returns to Ephesus
• Acts 19:1
It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul
passed through the upper country and came to
Ephesus…
• Acts 18:20-21
When they asked him to stay for a longer time, he did
not consent, but taking leave of them and saying, "I will
return to you again if God wills," he set sail from
Ephesus.
• We sometimes make knowing the Lord’s will this
mysterious mystical process, when in reality it is very
practical
Return to Ephesus
God Gives Desires
• Philippians 2:13
For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and
to work for His good pleasure.
God Gives Wisdom
• James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all generously and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.
Return to Ephesus
God Gives Direction
• Proverbs 16:9
The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD
directs his steps.
• Acts 16:6-8
They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian
region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to
speak the word in Asia; and after they came to
Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and
the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them; and
passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
Misinterpretation of This Passage
• The rest of this passage is often misinterpreted to
demonstrate that there is a separate “Baptism in the
Holy Spirit” that takes place after you are born again
• Acts 19:1
It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul
passed through the upper country and came to
Ephesus, and found some disciples.
• Not every disciple is a Christian, but every Christian is
a disciple
• These men were disciples, but were they Christians?
Paul Asks Some Probing Questions
• Acts 19:2-3
He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when
you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have
not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." And
he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they
said, "Into John's baptism."
• Q: Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you
believed?
• A: No, We don’t know if there is a Holy Spirit.
• Q: Into what were you baptized?
• A: Into John’s Baptism
Paul Points Them to Christ
• Acts 19:4
Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of
repentance, telling the people to believe in Him
who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."
• Paul proclaimed Christ to them from that starting
point
• Acts 8:35
Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning
from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him.
They Believe the Gospel
• Acts 19:5-7
When they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his
hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and
they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
There were in all about twelve men.
• This was not a second and separate baptism of the
Holy Spirit – It was them receiving the Holy Spirit
when they believed in Jesus
• This also demonstrates God’s faithfulness – he
brings John’s disciples the rest of the message 25
years later
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
• What then is the baptism of the Holy Spirit if it is
not some separate experience?
• Acts 1:4-5
Gathering them together, He commanded them
not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the
Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you
heard of from Me; for John baptized with water,
but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not
many days from now."
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
• Acts 2:38
Peter said to them, " Repent, and each of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
• Ephesians 1:13-14
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of
truth, the gospel of your salvation, having also
believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy
Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our
inheritance, with a view to the redemption of
God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
• Romans 8:9
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit,
if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you, but if
anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he
does not belong to Him.
• 1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one
body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or
free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
What is Speaking in Tongues
• This is now the 4th time we read an account of
people being baptized in the Holy Spirit and/or
Speaking in tongues
• We have 4 historical accounts in the book of Acts,
3 chapters of an Epistle written to a church that
was abusing the Spiritual gifts, and a few Old
Testament prophesies to build our doctrine on.
• “Speaking in tongues is prayer or praise spoken in
syllables not understood by the speaker.” (Wayne
Grudem, Systematic Theology)
What is Speaking in Tongues
• Tongues: γλῶσσα glō's-sä the tongue, a
member of the body, an organ of speech; a
tongue, the language or dialect used by a
particular people distinct from that of other nations
• This word would be better translated other
languages then other tongues
• The term “other tongues” makes it seem
somewhat mysterious or mystical
• Other tongues is simply speaking in a language
unknown to the speaker.
What is Speaking in Tongues
• It is prayer or praise to God
• Acts 2:7-11
They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are
not all these who are speaking Galileans? "And how
is it that we each hear them in our own language to
which we were born? "Parthians and Medes and
Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and
Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and
Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around
Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and
proselytes, Cretans and Arabs - we hear them in our
own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God."
What is Speaking in Tongues
• 1 Corinthians 14:13-17
Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he
may interpret… Otherwise if you bless in the spirit
only, how will the one who fills the place of the
ungifted say the "Amen" at your giving of thanks,
since he does not know what you are saying? For
you are giving thanks well enough, but the other
person is not edified.
• Prayer or praise spoken in languages not known to
the speaker
The Purpose of Speaking in Tongues
• A sign to unbelievers, a means of personal edification
and a means of edification to the church (with interpretation)
• 1 Corinthians 14:20-22
Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil
be infants, but in your thinking be mature. In the Law it
is written, "BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY
THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS
PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO
ME," says the Lord. So then tongues are for a sign, not
to those who believe but to unbelievers...
Tongues as a Sign
• We must understand that the book of Acts is a book of
transition.
• Acts 2 - A sign to unbelievers
• Acts 8 - A sign that Samaritans were part of the Church
• Acts 10 - A sign that Gentiles were part of the Church
• Acts 19 – A sign to the unbelieving Jews at Ephesus
• A witness to the unity of Christ’s Church
Tongues as a Means of Edification
• 1 Corinthians 14:4, 12-13
One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one
who prophesies edifies the church.
So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts,
seek to abound for the edification of the church.
Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he
may interpret.
Can All Christians Speak in Tongues?
• 1 Corinthians 12:28-31
And God has appointed in the church, first apostles,
second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then
gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of
tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not
prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All
are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have
gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues,
do they? All do not interpret, do they? But earnestly
desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more
excellent way.
Instruction to the Church
• 1 Corinthians 12:1-2
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want
you to be unaware. You know that when you were
pagans, you were led astray to the mute idols, however
you were led. – keep them in perspective
• 1 Corinthians 12:4-7
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.
There are varieties of effects, but the same God who
works all things in all persons. But to each one is given
the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
Instruction to the Church
• 1 Corinthians 12:26-27
And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with
it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice
with it. Now you are Christ's body, and individually
members of it. – it’s not about you – we’re connected
• 1 Corinthians 12:31
But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a
still more excellent way.
Instruction to the Church
• 1 Corinthians 13:8-12
Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they
will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease;
if there is knowledge, it will be done away. For we know
in part and we prophesy in part; but when the perfect
comes, the partial will be done away. When I was a
child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child,
reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away
with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly,
but then face to face…
Instruction to the Church
• 1 Corinthians 14:26-28
What is the outcome then, brethren? When you
assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a
revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation Let all
things be done for edification.
If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at
the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;
but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the
church; and let him speak to himself and to God.
Instruction to the Church
• 1 Corinthians 14:29-33
Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass
judgment. But if a revelation is made to another who is
seated, the first one must keep silent. For you can all
prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may
be exhorted; and the spirits of prophets are subject to
prophets; for God is not a God of confusion but of
peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
• 1 Corinthians 14:39-40
Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy,
and do not forbid to speak in tongues. But all things
must be done properly and in an orderly manner.
Speaking in Tongues
• 1 Corinthians 14:12
So also you, since you are
zealous of spiritual gifts,
seek to abound for the
edification of the church.
• 1 Peter 4:10
As each one has received a
special gift, employ it in
serving one another as
good stewards of the
manifold grace of God.
