A Word about Words

Scholarship: Academic achievement is the primary
selection criteria. Other criteria may also be involved
such as community involvement or extracurricular
activities.

Bursary: Financial need is the main criteria. However,
your academics may also be considered.

PSI: post-secondary institution. The college, tech
school or university you will attend after high school.

Student loans: provincial, federal or bank loans money you must pay back – more about that later.
So, why the buzz about money? How

Types of Scholarships
1.
PSI SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES
•Apply to the post-secondary school first
•Fill in the separate award application
•There are strict deadlines!
•Often requires a minimal academic standing in an
“admission average”.
•Many awards will also ask for a history of extracurricular and/or community activities you have
participated in throughout high school.
What’s an admission average?



The five courses you need to present in order to
attend a university or transfer college.
Different faculties require different courses.
English 30-1 is always a requirement.
Many faculties will include your band, choir, art
and/or PE classes or Work Experience 35. These
“option” courses are an excellent way to raise your
admission average for both acceptance and
scholarship $$$$.

universities have different criteria.

If you are currently a high school student applying for admission to the U of C for the
Fall 2014, you will be considered automatically for admission scholarships. The
admission scholarships program is currently under review and more details will be
available later.

Entrance Awards





Board of Governors’ Scholarship ($1000 for 80% +). $500 for average of 75
– 79.9% Deadline is December 15th. Separate app not required.
Board of Governors’ Relocation – 75% adm avg. beyond 100 km from
Lethbridge. ($500 - $1000)
Leadership Award – Scholarships available on the basis of your academic
achievement as well as other criteria, such as leadership ability and volunteer
experience. Separate application is required.
High School Applicant – awards are based on your predicted admission
average, as well as other criteria, such as financial need, volunteer experience
and artistic ability. Separate scholarship application is required. Deadline is
March 15.

Mount Royal College Entrance Awards




You must apply to Mount Royal College first, preferably between
December 1st – January 31st.
Apply for awards before March 1st.
Highest average on two group 1 subjects. These subjects are core
courses and/or band, choir, art, or phys ed.
President’s Scholarship and Bursaries
Final average of 80% in 5 appropriate grade 12 subjects.
Includes full tuition and fees for one full academic year plus $1,000
cash.

SAIT Entrance Awards






Must apply to SAIT first: between now and February 1st
Apply for entrance awards before March 15th
Some awards like the Cadmus- Calgary Foundation consider
academic achievement, leadership/community involvement,
and financial need. This one organization gives out 28 awards
of $3500.00 each to entering SAIT students
Most of the entrance awards at SAIT consider financial need in
their criteria.

Alexander Rutherford Scholarship for
high school achievement – Alberta
Government award.
Value: Up to $2,500
Selection: Achieving an 75 +% percent average on five designated
subjects in Grades, 10, 11 and 12. A student need not have
achieved this average in all three grades to qualify for a portion of
the scholarship.
Eligibility: Alberta residents who plan to enrol or are enrolled in a
full-time post-secondary program of at least one semester

Rocky View Teachers Scholarship





Graduates from our school or any other school in our
division or your parent works for the ATA Local #35.
Entering 1st year of study at a post-secondary
institution.
Based upon final grade 12 grades which must
include English 30-1 or 30-2. Does not include work
experience or special projects. Average of marks
must be at least 80%.
Apply in June. Be certain to order an OFFICIAL
transcript from Alberta Education to be sent directly
to the scholarship committee.

How to Apply






Request forms early from the career centre or the website.
Allow plenty of time before the deadline to gather all of the
information, get references, prepare essays, etc.
Photocopy all of your information.
Keyboard your responses, if possible.
Be accurate, honest and send in a neat application. You are
representing yourself in the best light.
Send applications by registered mail, if they are to be mailed.
