GOOD LISTENING SKILLS
PURPOSES OF LISTENING
1. We listen to obtain information.
2. We listen to understand.
3. We listen for enjoyment.
4. We listen to learn.


We remember between 25% and 50% of what we hear.
That means that when you talk to your boss,
colleagues, customers or spouse for 10 minutes, they
pay attention to less than half of the conversation.
Turn it around and it reveals that when you are
receiving directions or being presented with
information, you aren't hearing the whole message
either. You hope the important parts are captured in
your 25-50%, but what if they're not?
BECOMING AN ACTIVE LISTENER
There are five key elements of active listening.
They all help you ensure that you hear the other
person, and that the other person knows you are
hearing what they say.
1.DEFER JUDGMENT
Interrupting is a waste of time. It frustrates the
speaker and limits full understanding of the
message.


Allow the speaker to finish.
Don't interrupt with counter arguments.
2.RESPOND APPROPRIATELY
Active listening is a model for respect and
understanding. You are gaining
information and perspective. You add
nothing by attacking the speaker or
otherwise putting him or her down.
 Be candid, open, and honest in your
response.
 Assert your opinions respectfully.
 Treat the other person as he or she would
want to be treated.
3.PROVIDE FEEDBACK
Our personal filters, assumptions, judgments,
and beliefs can distort what we hear. As a
listener, your role is to understand what is being
said. This may require you to reflect what is
being said and ask questions.
4.SHOW THAT YOU ARE LISTENING.
Use your own body language and gestures to
convey your attention.
Nod occasionally.
 Smile and use other facial expressions.
 Note your posture and make sure it is open and
inviting.
 Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal
comments like yes, and uh huh.

5.PAY ATTENTION
Give the speaker your undivided attention, and
acknowledge the message. Recognize that nonverbal communication also "speaks" loudly.
Look at the speaker directly.
 Put aside distracting thoughts. Don't mentally
prepare a rebuttal!
 Avoid being distracted by environmental factors.
 "Listen" to the speaker's body language.
 Refrain from side conversations when listening in a
group setting

7 KEYS TO BETTER LISTENING

Listen for unspoken fears, concerns, moods, and
aspirations.

Good listening requires great wisdom.

Listen to others with respect and validation.

Listen without thinking about how you're going to
respond.

Listen for tell-tale signs of impending trouble.

Listen with positive regard for people's strengths &
abilities.

In this day and age, facts, statistics and other numbers
are used to prove everything. Intuition, gut feelings
and personal preferences are all out the door. Of
course, there are some who are trying to battle this
trend. Recently, Malcolm Gladwell wrote Blink, a bestseller which explores the usefulness of making splitsecond decisions based on intuition rather than careful
consideration of all the facts and figures.
In this book, Gladwell argues that initial impressions or gut-feelings - are quite rational. However, that this
"split-second" thinking process moves faster than what
we usually associate with thinking. If you are one of
these people - and there are many of us - Blink
provides "proof" that you're actually quite a rational
human being.
In this day and age, facts, statistics and other
numbers are used to prove EVERYTHING. Intuition,
gut feelings and personal preferences are all OUT
THE DOOR. Of course, there ARE some who are trying
to battle this trend. Recently, Malcolm Glad well
wrote BLINK, a best-seller which explores the
USEFULNESS of making SPLIT-SECOND
DECISIONS based on INTUITION rather than careful
consideration of all the facts and figures.
In his book, Glad well argues that INITIAL
IMPRESSIONS - or GUT-FEELINGS - are quite
rational. However, that this "split-second" thinking
process moves FASTER than what we usually
associate with thinking. If YOU are one of these
