Interdisciplinary Activities and
Collaborative Research Projects
Developed According to the California State Standards
in Biology Grades 9-12
by Teresa Spiteri
Dos Pueblos High School
RET II UCSB 2006
Classroom Context
* College Prep Biology
* Textbook: Modern Biology
Holt, Reinhart and Winston
* Class Size: 32 Students
* ELL: 1-4 Students
* Students with IEP’s: 1-5 Students
-Attention Deficit Disorder
-Difficulty with note-taking skills
-Extended test time
My 2005 Research Project
* The DAM Enzyme: The Effect of Selective
Mutations on Enzyme Mechanism of Action
(DAM = DNA Adenine Methyltransferase)
* Mentor: Stacey Peterson
* Principal Investigator: Norbert Reich
* The purpose of this project was to shed light
on the regulation mechanism of DAM, which
could lead to future development of antibiotics
to prevent Urinary Tract Infections.
Personal Health
* My Goal: To design interdisciplinary activities and
collaborative research projects that teach students
about their personal health while adhering to
California State Standards in Biology
* SDAIE Strategies
• DRTAs
• Establish background knowledge
• Highlight Essential Vocabulary
• Visual Aids / Graphs / Artwork
• Realia
• Real world applications
• Pair sharing / strategic grouping / group collaboration
• Enhance Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing skills
