• The ugly duckling can also grow into a
swan. With willpower and courage,
nothing can be impossible.
Willpower
and
courage
• Jerusha Abbott was a poor
orphan who had grown up in a
terrible orphanage. She couldn’t
go to a college but went to work
instead when she was eighteen.
• But, luckily, a trustee of the
orphanage who didn’t want to let
Jerusha Abbott know who he is,
decided to send her to college and
educated her to become a writer. But
she had to write him letters telling of
the progress in her studies and the
details of her daily life once a month.
• Jerusha Abbott’s
college life began.
Because she didn’t know
the trustee’s name and
didn’t want to call him
the fake name which the
chief of the orphanage
told her, she decided to
call him “Daddy-LongLegs”, as the figure of
the trustee she had
seen in the orphanage
once.
• She wrote over eighty letters to
Daddy-Long-Legs during the four
years in college. She told him all
the things let her feel happy, let
her feel melancholy, and let her
feel angry, happening in her
college life in the letters.
• Such as she didn’t know who
Michelangelo is and thought he
was an angel, a huge spider “read”
the letters for Daddy-Long-Legs,
and baked strange cookies for
teachers.
• To merit Daddy-Long-Legs’ trust,
Jerusha Abbott also wrote lots of
novels, poems, and articles diligently
and submit a piece of writing for
publication. Although she faced lots
of challenges, she still continued
writing. At last, some of her works
were published, and she also became a
real writer.
• Jerusha Abbott never gave up. She
always faced all the things
optimistically, no matter they are
difficult or horrible. We must learn
the willpower, courage, and optimism
of Jerusha Abbott. She is a really
fine example to us.
• Daddy-Long-Legs is really a good book
to read. It’s very funny and full of a
girl’s childlike thinking. You can’t find
any pessimistic thinking but
optimistic thinking in the book. After
reading, you will feel that you are full
of courage, and can face everything
bravely. It’s really an excellent work.
