Seed dispersal
Seed dispersal is a very important part of a plant’s life. Seeds can be
scattered in many ways:
 Wind: seeds must be very small and light to be carried by the
wind.
 Water: seeds fall into rivers and streams and get carried away
by the current.
 Gravity: seeds drop to the ground and roll away.
Seed dispersal
 Animals: there are many ways animals help to disperse seeds.
Animals eat fruits and berries and the seeds are scattered
when they go to the toilet. Animals store up nuts and can often
forget where they have stored them so the seeds and nuts are
able to germinate and grow. Some seeds are able to stick to
animal fur and can hook on and get carried far away.
 Force: seed pods explode and the seeds inside are blown away.
Now you know all about seed dispersal and how seeds are scattered it’s
time to play the ‘Let’s get sowing’ game!
Let’s get sowing
flash game:
seed guide
Dandelion seeds are very light. They are scattered by the
wind.
Apples fall from trees. Animals eat the apples and the
seeds are scattered when they go to the toilet.
Burdock is very prickly and has tiny hooks. They hook onto
an animal’s fur and get carried far away.
Sycamore seeds are shaped like a helicopter’s blades.
When they fall from the tree they are carried away by the
wind.

Raspberries are eaten by birds and animals. The seeds are
then scattered when they go to the toilet.
Cotton grass seeds are very light and fluffy. They are
scattered by the wind.
Foxglove seeds are very tiny. They are also very light
which means they can be scattered by the wind.
Squirrels gather nuts, like acorns, for winter food.
Sometimes they forget where they have hidden them!

Thistles have very delicate seeds. They are scattered by
the wind.
Bilberries are very tasty fruits. They are eaten by birds
and animals and the seeds are scattered when they go to
the toilet.
How well did you do?
