In Time Expressions
• To express the idea that an action began in the
past and is still going on in the present, Spanish
uses a sentence construction with the verb hacer.
• To ask how long or since when a certain action
has been going on, Spanish uses:
– ¿Cuánto (tiempo) hace que + verb phrase in
the present?
– ¿Desde cuándo + a verb phrase in the present?
– ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que buscas tu navaja?
– ¿Desde cuándo sale tu hermana con Jorge?
• To answer those questions, Spanish uses:
– Hace + a time expression + que + verb phrase in the
present
• (For + a period of time)
Hace una hora que busco mi navaja.
(I have been looking for my razor for an hour).
– A verb phrase in the present + desde hace + a time
expression
• (since… ago)
Mi hermana sale con Jorge desde hace dos años.
(My sister has been going out with Jorge since two years
ago.)
Hacer to express ago with past
actions.
• To tell how long ago an action or event occurred,
Spanish uses the following construction in which
hace followed by a time expression is equivalent
to English expression of time AGO.
• Hace + a time expression+ que + verb in the
preterite.
• ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que se durmió el bebé?
• Hace una hora que se durmió.
• Verb in the preterite + hace + a time
expression.
• ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que conociste a Raúl?
• Conocí a Raúl hace tres años.
• Note than when the hace construction
comes first, que introduces the main clause;
but when hace and the time expression
follow the verb, que is not used.
