What is a Community Foundation?
Community Foundations are charitable trusts that
support local community causes.
2 Key Areas:
• Raising the level of giving
• Grants to local communities
Building permanent community funds
and linking local donors with local needs.
Named Personal Funds
 Individual named funds are established for larger donations,
based on the particular areas of interest & specific geographical
area.
 Bespoke, personal service to donors to enable individuals,
families and local companies to support their local community.

• Provide a comprehensive service to donors who want to support their
local communities – giving effectively and creatively
• Manage an efficient & effective grant programme to community and
voluntary groups
• Build permanent community funds to support the needs of communities
and voluntary groups across Surrey
Income generated is used year after year to make grants to
communities
Summary – Key Figures
Since being established in 2005,
Surrey Community Foundation has:
Built endowment funds of £2 Million (20 funds)
Established 18 ‘flow-through’ funds for grant making
Made 400 grant awards of over £1 million to charities
and community groups across Surrey
The 2 main grant programmes:
General Funds
A number of funds, established by families,
charitable trusts and companies, to support
the needs of communities and voluntary
groups across Surrey.
Themed Funds
• SURREY ARTS FUND
£19,000 GIFTS OF SHARES
• Donations are pooled
into a multi-purpose Fund
to support local community
Art projects
• SURREY SPORTS FUND
• SURREY CHAMBERS
OF COMMERCE COMMUNITY FUND
General Funds
We encourage community groups to make contact with
us, in order to discuss the possibility of making an
application.
Once we have some details of the organisation and the
project for which funding is sought, we are then able to
advise appropriately.
Surrey Community Foundation is building
permanent funding for Surrey’s
communities.
£1 million is available from the government
if the Community Foundation can match this
with a further £1 million raised from
donors by 2011. This will increase the
permanent funds by £2 million, with
the income generated enabling grants to be
awarded in perpetuity.
2) Grassroots Grants
• Over £1 million government-funding is available in
Surrey (2008-2011)
• For small voluntary led community groups, with an
average annual income of less than £30,000
which have been active for at least one year
• Grants of between £250 and £5,000 are available

• Activities to expand an
existing project
• Local event or workshop
• Equipment
or other capital items

4 Grassroots Grants
totalling £11,692 have been
awarded
These include:
•£5,000 to Love Me – Love My Mind towards the costs of
Epsom Mental Health Week, which takes place from 4th to 10th October with
the theme of "Promoting Wellbeing in the Community".
£5,000 to Mid-Surrey Mediation Service, an
organisation which works to encourage neighbours to resolve their problems
and reach a mutually beneficial solution. The grant will provide a contribution
towards the running costs of the organisation for two years.

to be spent in Grassroots Grants
between now and March 2011
