Early Life

Erwin Evans Smith was born in Honey Grove, Texas on
August 22, 1886 to Albert A. and Mary Alice (Erwin) Smith.

When he turned seven him and his mother moved fifteen
miles west of Bonham. He would visit his relatives near
Quanah, where he was introduced to the ranch life. The
Ranch life really appeal to Smith, so he started to make
sketches of horses and Indians. Smith also got a cheap
camera to take pictures of what he saw.
Career

In 1904, Smith went to Chicago to learn how to sculpt from
Lorado Taft, one of the foremost American sculptors. After
two years, Smith went back to Texas with Taft. He took many
pictures of the life on the ranch. When taking the pictures,
Smith told the people being photographed to act like he was
not there, which allowed him to get a realistic photo.

In 1906, Smith went to Boston to learn from Bella Lyon Pratt,
an eminent sculptor.
By 1908, forty of Smith’s photographs were enlarged and
were intriguing crowds in a downtown Boston exhibit.


1800 of Smiths Film and plates were put in The
Library of Congress.
100 photographs Smith took were put on display in
the Texas Memorial Museum.
His photos are still up in the Texas Memorial
Museum and the Amon Carter Museum.
Personal Life

Smith never got married.

In 1914 came back to Texas to start
ranching by himself, but in 1917, Smith
became bankrupt.

He spent his final years at his place
outside of Bonham.
His Death
Erwin Evans Smith died on September
4, 1947
 He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in
Honey Grove

