Advisory Board
◦ Members
◦ Recommendations for 2012 budget
◦ Discussion of 2012 budget
An affiliate fair must serve a minimum of 50 students in grades 9 through 12 or have at least five high schools
participating in its fair. The fair must serve a geographic territory that is not covered by another affiliate fair,
except in cases of state or national fairs. The fair must operate under the Intel ISEF Rules and Guidelines and
ensure that students and teachers are aware of these requirements as they begin research projects. The Fair
Director agrees to hold the Affiliated Fair by the given deadline in early April.
The NWARSEF territory consists of 14 counties: Baxter, Benton, Boone, Carroll, Crawford, Faulkner, Franklin, Johnson,
Madison, Marion, Newton, Searcy, Sebastian, and Washington
Fairs with 1, 2 or 3 projects may bring individual or team Finalists representing the projects committed, up to 3 student
observers and a maximum of 6 remaining official party. (A fair must minimally have 1 Adult-in-Charge to chaperone the
Finalists.)
Fairs pay a fee to affiliate with the Intel ISEF. The base fee is $600 for fairs that are allotted one to two projects. Fairs
with more than two projects will pay an additional $100 per project. As stated above, fairs do not have to send their
allotted number of projects to the Intel ISEF and may instead commit to sending fewer. This helps save on the
registration fee and travel costs for the finalists and may help reduce the affiliation fee as well.

Most Common Reasons for Projects to Fail to Qualify at Intel ISEF
1. Human, vertebrate animal, or PHBA studies that did not have preapproval
a.
b.
c.
Need IRB preapproval for human subjects studies
Need SRC or IACUC preapproval for vertebrate animal studies
Need SRC or IBC preapproval for PHBA studies
2. Prohibited Vertebrate Animal Studies

i.
Studies done at home/school/field that should have been done at a regulated research institution
Studies that caused more than momentary pain or suffering or that were designed to kill
Toxicity studies
Predator/vertebrate prey experiments
Studies where student performed euthanasia on a vertebrate animal
Studies with LD-30 or greater in any group or subgroup
Studies where animals have a weight loss greater than or equal to 15%
Studies where there was an inappropriate restriction of water or food
Studies treated as embryonic studies that were actually vertebrate studies
3. Prohibited Studies using Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents (PHBA's)
a.
b.
Microorganisms were cultured at home
BSL-2 studies (including opening plates or containers of unknown microorganisms) done in a BSL-1 lab
4. Prohibited Human Subjects Studies
a.
b.
Studies where the IRB required written documentation of consents which were not obtained
Studies where the student used surveys/questionnaires without IRB review and approval
5. Eligibility Problems
a.
b.
c.
Student worked with a partner or team but competed as an individual, or vice versa
Project was more than 1 year in length or was too old
More than three students on a team
6. Scientific Misconduct
a.
b.
c.
Plagiarism
Student presented mentor’s research as his/her own
Falsification of data.
7. Other problems that may result in an FTQ
a.
b.
Continuation study which was merely a repeat of a previous project conducted by the student
Student removed or added items to the project display which he/she had been previously told to change
