DSS Mission Statement
The Disability Support Service (DSS) is committed in
as far as is reasonably possible, to empowering
students with disabilities achieve their academic and
vocational goals in an inclusive learning
environment.
Goals of the Service
 To increase the access, participation, retention and success of
students with disabilities in UCC.
 To develop policies and procedures that increase the inclusion
of students with disabilities within the University.
 To mainstream facilities for students with disabilities across
campus.
 To assess and train students in the use of assistive
technologies, thereby, enabling them to become independent
learners.

 Liaison with Guidance Counsellors at Second Level.
 Promotion of Disability Access Route to Education (DARE)
 Summer schools and Easter schools for students with sensory
disabilities
 Specific Orientation Programme for incoming students
 Assistive Technology Outreach Programme
Current Students
 A Needs Assessment is conducted on all students who register with
the service.
 Individual Educational Plan is developed depending on impact of
disability on degree programme being pursued.
 The Individual Educational Plan, (IEP) may include any combination
of educational, personal or technical supports depending on
students’ needs.
 Role of ESWs is crucial to success of students registered with DSS
 A Learning Educational Needs Statement (LENS) is sent to all
students

academic department as soon as possible
 The Disability Support Service will no longer request
extensions on behalf of students with disabilities
