Support in planning revision at home.
A particular focus on success in
mathematics and English
Final tips and advice
What is the key to a
stress free exam period ?
Early
Preparation !
What is the key to
Good Results ?
Early
Preparation !
One entry, one attempt


No modules
All exams can only be sat once, your
first attempt counts for your Key Stage
4 attainment
Impact





All to play for in May/June 2016
All exams in one five week period
However, to alleviate pressure, we
intend to enter a significant number of
students for their English exam in June
of Year 10
Core Science will be entered in Year 10
Statistics may be entered in Year 10..
English Entry May 2015



Ms Ayling will talk about this in more
depth later
However, students being entered will
be able to focus entirely on English
Language, we will collapse their
curriculum and run revision and mock
exams
This is the only chance to pass
however, no second chances for KS4
Question number 1 from parents

How long should my son/daughter be
revising for?
Simply to offer an answer




In the build up to exams, previous month
Two hours / night (school day)
Four hours / day (weekend)
The secret is to make sure that the hours
put in are high quality and profitable.
An equally important question

How can we help plan their revision?
Using your calendar / planner
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Add the exam dates
Add in key events that can not be moved e.g.
Swimming club, Mum’s birthday treat etc.
Schedule in your revision in 30 min. spells.
Rotate subjects around. Focus on those that
need the most improvement.
Plan long term. Do not try and cram it all in just
before
Creating the right learning
environment.




A room that is away from the drama of
the rest of the family.
Could be at granny’s or a neighbour’s.
Natural light / good lighting prevents
tiredness.
A table / desk is actually far more
comfortable than sitting on a floor or bed.
Creating the right learning
environment.



Ensure that all the right equipment is
available. (pens, paper etc.)
Encourage them to have a bottle of
water on the desk.
Having music on quietly can help, but
not the radio or a brand new album.
Certainly not TV.
You should hopefully end up
with a situation like this.
An important role for
parents is to ensure
that their child gets
the balance between
quality revision,
exercise and free
time.
This can be achieved
by being aware of their
revision plan,
monitoring it
carefully……….
And then providing
small rewards as
motivation.
Should parents get involved with
helping their child revise ?
YES.
Even if the subject is
not one you are
strong in, being there
to ask questions, help
create notes and
discuss ideas can be
a great help.
But be careful………
Not to go overboard
by…
-Telling them what or
how to revise.
-Undermining their
confidence when
things don not go well.
-Or exerting too much
pressure.
What is the worst type of
revision?
Without doubt just sitting there
reading a text or exercise book,
even if you are taking notes, will
have little impact.
So what is the best type of
revision?
•
•
•
•
•
•
Practice papers
Focussed exam questions
THE QUESTIONS YOU GET WRONG
Structured note formatting with purpose
On line tests and revision aids.
Assessment for Learning – Marking your
own or your friend’s work / practice
questions.

How to help at exam time.



Check the exam time as soon as you
receive it
Keep your own copy of their exam
timetable and double check that they are
going in at the right time on the right day
Ensure they are in full school uniform
when they leave the house allowing
extra time for transport delays
How to help at exam time.




Make sure that they have all the right
equipment. A good black ball point pen
(Bic) is essential as the exam board
scan papers for marking
All equipment in a clear pencil case
Bring a calculator to the calculator maths
exams!
Ensure that the mobile phone is left at
home. (one beep and they will have to
be removed from the exam) No data
storage devices of any kind are allowed.

Subject Leader English
English Language IGCSE – Cambridge (CIE) 0522
There are 3 pieces of coursework to be completed. Each piece of
coursework should be 500-1000 words. These will be conducted
during lesson time and also will be expected to be worked on for
homework.
There is a huge focus on the accuracy of the written language.
• Coursework 1: informative, analytical and/or argumentative.
• Coursework 2: imaginative, descriptive and/or narrative.
• Coursework 3: a response to a text or texts chosen by the
teacher, with input from the students.
English Language IGCSE – Cambridge (CIE) 0522
Exam – 1hr 45mins / 2 hr – To be taken in June 2015
Two sections with a variety of short and long questions which
test understanding of unseen text. The second part of the paper
is based on the extract and tests reading and writing so students
must be aware of writing skills.
Speaking and Listening
Two speaking and listening tasks. Students will have time to
prepare for these tasks and will then complete them ‘live’ – the
assessments will be recorded and marked as they are completed
‘live’.
What to do at home.
• Use SAM Learning
• Use the quiet time alone to carefully check
coursework
• Use past papers provided by teachers to get to grips
with what the questions are asking.
• Complete revision pack activities
• Prepare for speaking and listening tasks
We will have three days off time table for
intensive work on the IGCSE exam and
preparation time for the speaking and listening
assignments.
There will some intensive revision classes for
some students.
