The Holy Spirit
working
Act 2:38 Then Peter said to them,
Repent and be baptized, every one
of you, in the name of Jesus Christ
to remission of sins, and you shall
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Act 2:39 For the promise is to you
and to your children, and to all
those afar off, as many as the Lord
our God shall call.
Is the Holy Spirit
available to
believers today?
Pentecostal claims:
* Healing
* Slain in the spirit
* Speaking in Tongues
Slain in the spirit not
Biblical:
Falling over backwards
always judgement not
blessing
(Gen 49 v 17, 1 Sam 4 v
18, Is 28 v 13, John 18 v 6)
Speaking in Tongues
Tongue = Grk = dialektos
Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the
multitude came together, and were confounded,
because that every man heard them speak in
his own language (dialektos).
Act 2:7 And they were all amazed and
marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are
not all these which speak Galilaeans?
Act 2:8 And how hear we every man in our
own tongue (dialektos), wherein we were born?
Act 21:40 And when he had
allowed him, Paul, standing on
the stairs, beckoned with his
hand to the people; and a
great silence having been
made, he addressed them in
the Hebrew tongue
(dialektos), saying,
1Co 14:27 If any one speak
with a tongue, let it be two, or
at the most three, and
separately, and let one
interpret;
1Co 14:28 but if there be no
interpreter, let him be silent in
the assembly, and let him
speak to himself and to God.
1Co 14:6 And now, brethren,
if I come to you speaking with
tongues, what shall I profit
you, unless I shall speak to
you either in revelation, or in
knowledge, or in prophecy, or
in teaching?
Tongues easy to self
generate.
Unlike miracles.
The gifts operated as a
“package deal”.
See 1 Cor 12 v 4 - 11
Act 2:38 And Peter said to them,
Repent, and be baptised, each one
of you, in the name of Jesus Christ,
for remission of sins, and ye will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Act 2:39 For to you is the promise
and to your children, and to all who
are afar off, as many as the Lord our
God may call.
Deu 18:22 When a prophet
speaks in the name of
Jehovah, if the thing does not
follow nor come to pass, that
is the thing which Jehovah
has not spoken. The prophet
has spoken it presumptuously.
You shall not be afraid of him.
Deu 13:1 If a prophet rises among you, or a
dreamer of dreams, and gives you a sign or a
wonder,
Deu 13:2 and the sign or the wonder which
he foretold to you occurs, saying, Let us go
after other gods which you have not known,
and let us serve them,
Deu 13:3 you shall not listen to the words of
that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For
Jehovah your God is testing you to know
whether you love Jehovah your God with all
your heart and with all your soul.
Mar 16:15 And He said to them, Go into all the world, proclaim the
gospel to all the creation.
Mar 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he
who does not believe will be condemned.
Mar 16:17 And miraculous signs will follow to those believing these
things: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak new
tongues;
Mar 16:18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly
thing, it will not hurt them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they
will be well.
Mar 16:19 Then indeed, after speaking to them, the Lord was
taken up into Heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
Mar 16:20 And going out, they proclaimed everywhere, the Lord
working with them and confirming the Word by miraculous signs
following. Amen.
Available Today?
* Given to confirm the word
* Why withdrawn?
* Removed because their purpose
was expired?
* Removed because of apostasy?
Act 5:32: And we are his
witnesses of these things, and
the Holy Spirit also, which
God has given to those that
obey him.
John Thomas (founder of
Christadelphians)
Eureka Vol 1 / Sect 5 / Page 164:
“ The knowing and prophesying
from parts might probably have
continued if “the Mystery of
Iniquity” had not spoiled and
desolated everything …”
Rev 2:5 Remember therefore
whence thou art fallen, and
repent, and do the first works:
but if not, I am coming to thee,
and I will remove thy lamp out
of its place, except thou shalt
repent.
1Co 13:9 For we know in part, and we
prophesy in part.
1Co 13:10 But when that which is perfect is
come, then that which is in part shall be done
away.
1Co 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a
child, I understood as a child, I thought as a
child: but when I became a man, I put away
childish things.
1Co 13:12 For now we see through a glass,
darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part;
but then shall I know even as also I am known.
That which is perfect is not the
completion of the canon of
scripture.
John Thomas believed it was
when Christ returned.
Pro 4:18 But the path of the just is
as the shining light, that shines more
and more to the perfect day.
Heb 11:39 And these all, having
obtained a good report through faith,
did not receive the promise,
Heb 11:40 for God had provided
some better thing for us, that they
should not be made perfect without
us.
1Pe 5:10 But the God of all
grace, He calling us to His
eternal glory by Christ Jesus,
after you have suffered a little,
He will perfect, confirm,
strengthen, and establish you.
Heb 5:7 For Jesus, in the days of His
flesh, when He had offered up prayers
and supplications with strong cryings and
tears to Him who was able to save Him
from death, and was heard in that He
feared,
Heb 5:8 though being a Son, yet He
learned obedience by the things which He
suffered.
Heb 5:9 And being perfected, He became
the Author of eternal salvation to all those
who obey Him,
Act 2:15 for these are not full of wine, as you suppose, for it is the
third hour of the day;
Act 2:16 but this is that which was spoken through the prophet
Joel,
Act 2:17 And it shall be in the last days, saith God, that I will pour
out of my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your
elders shall dream with dreams;
Act 2:18 yea, even upon my bondmen and upon my bondwomen
in those days will I pour out of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
Act 2:19 And I will give wonders in the heaven above and signs on
the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
Act 2:20 the sun shall be changed to darkness and the moon to
blood, before the great and gloriously appearing day of the Lord
come.
Act 2:21 And it shall be that whosoever shall call upon the name of
the Lord shall be saved.
Joe 2:28 And it shall be afterward, I will pour out My
Spirit on all flesh. And your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy; your old men shall dream dreams; your
young men shall see visions.
Joe 2:29 And also I will pour out My Spirit on the slaves
and on the slave women in those days.
Joe 2:30 And I will show wonders in the heavens, and
in the earth, blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
Joe 2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and
the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and
awesome day of Jehovah.
Joe 2:32 And it shall be, whoever shall call on the
name of Jehovah shall be saved; for salvation shall be
in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, as Jehovah has said,
and in the remnant whom Jehovah shall call.
* Last days – just before Jesus returns
* Signs in the heavens – blood / fire / sun to darkness /
moon to blood
Mat 24:29 And immediately after the tribulation of those
days, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not
give her light, and the stars shall fall from the heaven,
and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.
Mat 24:30 And then the sign of the Son of Man shall
appear in the heavens. And then all the tribes of the
earth shall mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man
coming in the clouds of the heaven with power and
great glory.
Acts 2 was not a “fulfillment” but a foreshadow.
“THIS IS THAT”
Also consider:
Rev 11:3 And I will give power to My two witnesses, and they will
prophesy a thousand, two hundred and sixty days, clothed in
sackcloth.
Rev 11:4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands
standing before the God of the earth.
Rev 11:5 And if anyone will hurt them, fire proceeds out of their
mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone will hurt them, so
it is right for him to be killed.
Rev 11:6 These have authority to shut up the heaven, that it may
not rain in the days of their prophecy. And they have authority over
waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with every
plague, as often as they desire.
Rev 11:11 And after three days and a half, a spirit of life from God
entered into them, and they stood on their feet. And great fear fell
on those seeing them.
Rev 11:12 And they heard a great voice from Heaven saying to
them, Come up here. And they went up to Heaven in a cloud, and
their enemies watched them.
Rev 11:13 And in that hour a great earthquake occurred, and the
tenth part of the city fell. And seven thousand names of men were
slain in the earthquake. And the rest were frightened and gave
glory to the God of Heaven.
Rev 11:14 The second woe passed away. Behold, the third woe
comes quickly.
Rev 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded. And there were great
voices in Heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world have become
the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ. And He will reign
forever and ever.
The Spirit of God has many different manifestations:
GIFTS
1Co 12:4 But there are differences of gifts, but the same Spirit.
1Co 12:5 And there are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
1Co 12:6 And there are differences of workings, but it is the same God
working all things in all.
1Co 12:7 But to each one is given the showing forth of the Spirit to our
profit.
1Co 12:8 For through the Spirit is given to one a word of wisdom; and to
another a word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;
1Co 12:9 and to another faith by the same Spirit; and to another the gifts
of healing by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:10 and to another workings of powers, to another prophecy; and
to another discerning of spirits; and to another kinds of tongues; and to
another the interpretation of tongues.
1Co 12:11 But the one and the same Spirit works all these things,
distributing separately to each one as He desires.
Rom 12:4 For even as we have many
members in one body, and all members do not
have the same function,
Rom 12:5 so we the many are one body in
Christ, and each one members of one another.
Rom 12:6 Then having gifts differing according
to the grace that is given to us, if prophecy,
according to the proportion of faith;
Rom 12:7 or ministry, in the ministry; or he who
teaches, in the teaching;
Rom 12:8 or he who exhorts, in the
encouragement; or he who shares, in simplicity;
or he who takes the lead, in diligence; or he
who shows mercy, in cheerfulness.
FRUIT
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the
Spirit is: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
faith,
Gal 5:23 meekness, selfcontrol; against such things
there is no law.
ANGELS
Heb 1:13 But as to which of the
angels said he ever, Sit at my right
hand until I put thine enemies as
footstool of thy feet?
Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering
spirits, sent out for service on
account of those who shall inherit
salvation?
Joh 14:26 But the Comforter,
the Holy Spirit whom the
Father will send in My name,
He shall teach you all things
and bring all things to your
remembrance, whatever I
have said to you.
THE WORD
Joh 6:63 It is the Spirit that
makes alive, the flesh profits
nothing. The words that I
speak to you are spirit and are
life.
Eph 5:18 And do not be
drunk with wine, in which
is excess, but be filled
with the Spirit ( pneuma
= breath of God) …
Laying on of
hands
Used to bless:
Mar 10:13 And they brought little children to him that he
might touch them. But the disciples rebuked those that
brought them .
Mar 10:14 But Jesus seeing it , was indignant, and said
to them, Suffer the little children to come to me; forbid
them not; for of such is the kingdom of God.
Mar 10:15 Verily I say to you, Whosoever shall not
receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall in no
wise enter into it.
Mar 10:16 And having taken them in his arms, having
laid his hands on them, he blessed them.
Used to pass on Holy Spirit:
Act 8:17 Then they laid their
hands upon them, and they
received the Holy Spirit.
Act 8:18 But Simon, having seen
that by the laying on of the hands
of the apostles the Holy Spirit
was given, offered them money,
Act 19:6 And Paul having laid
his hands on them, the Holy
Spirit came upon them, and
they spoke with tongues and
prophesied.
For Healing:
Act 28:8 And it happened that
the father of Publius lay ill of
fever and dysentery; to whom
Paul entered in, and having
prayed and laid his hands on
him cured him.
Mar 6:4 But Jesus said to them, A
prophet is not despised save in his
own country, and among his
kinsmen, and in his own house.
Mar 6:5 And he could not do any
work of power there, save that laying
his hands on a few infirm persons he
healed them .
Luk 13:11 And lo, there was a woman
having a spirit of infirmity eighteen years,
and she was bent together and wholly
unable to lift her head up.
Luk 13:12 And Jesus, seeing her, called
to her , and said to her, Woman, thou art
loosed from thine infirmity.
Luk 13:13 And he laid his hands upon
her; and immediately she was made
straight, and glorified God.
To Commission:
1Ti 4:14 Do not neglect the
gift in you, which was given
you by prophecy, with the
laying on of the hands of the
body of elders.
To Commission:
Act 6:5 And the saying pleased all the
multitude. And they chose Stephen, a
man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and
Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and
Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicholas, a
proselyte of Antioch.
Act 6:6 They set these before the
apostles. And having prayed, they laid
hands on them.
But also to show solidarity and support:
Act 13:1 And in Antioch some among the
existing church were prophets and teachers.
(such as Barnabas, and Simeon who was called
Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, the
foster-brother of Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.
Act 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord and
fasted, the Holy Spirit said, So, then, separate
Barnabas and Saul to Me for the work to which I
have called them.
Act 13:3 Then having fasted and prayed and
laid hands on them, they let them go.
Laying on of hands – first principle:
Heb 6:1 Wherefore leaving the doctrine
of the first principles of Christ, let us press
on unto perfection; not laying again a
foundation of repentance from dead
works, and of faith toward God,
Heb 6:2 of the teaching of baptisms, and
of laying on of hands, and of resurrection
of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
Heb 5:12 For when by reason of the time ye
ought to be teachers, ye have need again that
some one teach you the rudiments of the first
principles of the oracles of God; and are
become such as have need of milk, and not of
solid food.
Heb 5:13 For every one that partaketh of milk
is without experience of the word of
righteousness; for he is a babe.
Heb 5:14 But solid food is for fullgrown men,
even those who by reason of use have their
senses exercised to discern good and evil.
Jas 5:13 Does any one among you suffer
evil? let him pray. Is any happy? let him sing
psalms.
Jas 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call
to him the elders of the assembly, and let
them pray over him, anointing him with oil in
the name of the Lord;
Jas 5:15 and the prayer of faith shall heal the
sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he
be one who has committed sins, it shall be
forgiven him.
Mat 7:7 Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and
you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.
Mat 7:8 For each one who asks receives; and he
who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, it shall be
opened.
Mat 7:9 Or what man is there of you, if his son asks
a loaf, will he give him a stone?
Mat 7:10 Or if he asks a fish, will he give him a
snake?
Mat 7:11 If you then, being evil, know how to give
good gifts to your children, how much more shall
your Father in Heaven give good things to those who
ask Him?
Luk 11:13 If therefore you,
being evil, know how to give
good gifts to your children,
how much rather shall the
Father who is of heaven give
the Holy Spirit to them that ask
him?
The spirit of God has “measure”.
One can have more or less of it.
•The gifts operated partitively
• Jesus: Joh 3:34 For he whom God hath sent
speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the
Spirit by measure.
• To pray for it (as seen)
• All of the spirit gifts we have and can have more:
Wisdom, knowledge, faith, prophecy, languages,
discernment, healing, miracles, interpretation
