Emotional Intelligence affects how we manage our behavior, navigate through social situations, and make decisions to achieve positive results. WHAT EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IS NOT! • Not your ability to be nice • It’s not a “let it all hang out” philosophy for feelings • No sex differences • Not fixed genetically It can be learned! WHY IS EQ IMPORTANT? WHY DO EMPLOYERS VALUE EQ OVER IQ? 1. Usually remains calm under pressure 2. Resolves conflict effectively 3. Are empathetic to their colleagues– and act as such 4. STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE YOUR SOCIAL AWARENESS Foundational Skill: Social awareness is your ability to recognize and understand the emotions of others. • Greet people by name • Watch body language • Clear away the clutter STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Relationship Management is your ability to use selfawareness, self-management, and social awareness to manage interactions successfully. • Be open and curious • Acknowledge the other person’s feelings • When you care, show it!
