John 14:16-17
And I will pray the Father, and He will
give you another Helper, that He may
abide with you forever; the Spirit of
truth, whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees Him nor knows
Him; but you know Him, for He dwells
with you and will be in you.
Acts 2:1-4
Acts 10:44-47
Acts 19:4-6
Acts 9:17-18 & 1 Cor. 14:18
What is “Speaking in Tongues?”
Speaking in Tongues is a Biblebased experienced demonstrated
throughout the Book of Acts
Speaking in Tongues was foretold
by Jesus Christ in Mark 16:17
Speaking in Tongues is the
evidence of being Baptized in the
Holy Spirit
Baptism in the Holy Spirit
• At salvation, God put His Spirit within us to
make us alive unto Himself. Through His
Spirit we now have fellowship, relationship
and intimacy with Him.
• Titus 3:5
• Ephesians 2:1
• 1 Corinthians 6:19
Baptism in the Holy Spirit
• But there is more! God wants His Spirit to
flow out from you to demonstrate His
power and presence in this world.
• Luke 3:16
• Acts 1:8
• John 7:38-39
Acts 2:38-39
Peter said to them, "Repent, and let
every one of you be baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ for the remission
of sins; and you shall receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit. “For the promise is to
you and to your children, and to all who
are afar off, as many as the Lord our
God will call."
What is “Speaking in Tongues?”
• Speaking in Tongues is prayer
language given to us by the Holy
Spirit for a higher dimension of
praying according to the will of
God
• 1 John 5:4
• Matthew 6:10
Romans 8:26-28
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our
weaknesses. For we do not know what
we should pray for as we ought, but the
Spirit Himself makes intercession for us
with “groanings” which cannot be
uttered…
Romans 8:26-28
Now He who searches the hearts knows
what the mind of the Spirit is, because
He makes intercession for the saints
according to the will of God. And we
know that all things work together for
good to those who love God, to those
who are the called according to His
purpose.
Common Misunderstanding
1 Corinthians 12, 13 & 14 is addressing
the Gifts of the Spirit, not the prayer
language of the believer!
1 Corinthians 12:8-10
…for to one is given the word of wisdom
through the Spirit, to another the word of
knowledge through the same Spirit, to
another faith by the same Spirit, to
another gifts of healings by the same
Spirit, to another the working of
miracles, to another prophecy, to
another discerning of spirits, to another
different kinds of tongues, to another the
interpretation of tongues.
Don’t be confused…
The purpose of the Gift of Tongues is not
intercessory prayer;
it is a sign to demonstrate that the Holy
Spirit is bringing a supernatural
message to the church. (This is why
interpretation is required.)
It is the same in essence as the prayer
language, but it is different in purpose
and use.
This is Important!
While certain people will exercise the
Gifts of the Spirit, everyone can and
should experience these operations in a
general sense.
Everyone should have wisdom,
knowledge, discernment, faith, etc…
…and speaking in tongues as a Prayer
Language!
