Medical Emergencies – Need to develop Basic Life Support Skills in every child First aid for schools • Every year, 150,000 people die in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live. • Even so, fewer than one in 10 people have been trained in first aid. • We want every young person to have the opportunity to learn basic life saving skills at school. There is evidence that use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) by laypersons improves rates of survival from cardiac arrest, but there is no consensus on the optimal content and duration of training for this purpose. Efficacy of Bystander CPR • University Medical Center of the Johannes GutenbergUniversity, Department of Anaesthesiology, Mainz, Germany. • However, in Germany most people attend a course on emergency measures only once in their life, as at the moment there is not any legally binding repetition of such courses. • Basic Life Support (BLS) by lay people has a special importance in the care of emergency patients. • First aid and BLS are in the first three links of the chain of survival • Bystander help during cardiac arrest is one of the requirements for a successful resuscitation of a patient • However, lay people can only play their role within the chain of survival if they are adequately trained Difference between a life lost and a life saved. Factors influencing the behaviour of lay people in emergency situations. Motivation Theoretical & Practical knowledge Competence Side effects of BAD First aid • Delays definitive treatment • Victim condition deteriorates • Does no good/harm Module to read signs of a disturbed mind. • Citizens with some training can find out if someone has any mental health issues. • 50% of suicide victims leave visible signs, which if picked up in time, can save their lives. Look out FOR • Change of body language to that of resignation • Sudden change in behaviour and motivation • Sleep anomalies and loss of appetite • Giving away things that are dear • Indicating life is worthless or it should be ended Four key themes • • • • student centred resource context of learning skill development technological support • Interactive photo-stories show how Kiran deals effectively with four common first aid scenarios and makes an emergency call. • Young first aider Young first aider fully comprehensive first aid learning resource targeted for 14 to 16 year-olds. Covering 15 first aid topics using lesson plans, video clips, scenario cards, PowerPoint slides and posters A DVD- as a teaching aid Four main components: • Pre- and post-tests • Best practice in ‘What, How, Why’ • Critical Thinking; problem-based scenarios like suffocation, choking, heart attack • BLS in special circumstances such as, pregnancy, trauma and near drowning Realistic scenarios are portrayed through video footage CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION (CBSE) has issued a circular ‘Comprehensive School Health Programme and Creating Health Club in the school’.
