Estimating Products
0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011
• One way to estimate product is to use
compatible numbers , which are numbers
that are easy to divide mentally.
• Another method is estimating numbers by
rounding to 0, ½ or 1.

CHAPTER 7
Estimate using Compatible Numbers
0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011
• Estimate ¼ x 21.
¼ x 21 means ¼ of 21
Find a number close to 21 that is a multiple of 4
20 and 4 are compatible
¼ x 21
¼ x 20
numbers since 20 ÷ 4 = 5
¼ x 20 = 5
20 ÷ 4 = 5
So, ¼ x 21 is about 5

Estimate 2/3 x 97
Estimate 1/3 x 97
1/3 x 97
1/3 x 96 96 and 3 are compatible numbers
1/3 x 96 = 32
96 ÷ 3 = 32
If 1/3 of 96 is 32, then 2/3 of 96 = 2 x 32 =64
So, 2/3 of 97 is about 64

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011
Estimate 1/3 x 8/9
• 1/3 x 8/9 = ½ x 1 = 1
• 1/10 x 6/14 = 0 x ½ = 0
• 9/16 x 27/50 = ½ x ½ = 1
• 24/26 x 29/31 = 1 x 1 = 1

CHAPTER 7
Estimate with Mixed Numbers
0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011
• Round each mixed number to the nearest
whole number
• For example: 11 ¾ x 8 1/7
• 11 ¾ to 12 and 8 1/7 to 8
• 11 ¾ x 8 1/7 = 12 x 8 = 96
• So, the product is about 96
