Digit
Any of the symbols used to write numbers are
called Digits.
Example:
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Standard Form
Standard Form is a way of writing a number
that shows only its digits.
Example:
1,325 is a standard Form.

Expanded Form
A way of writing a number as the sum of values
of its digits.
Example:
156 can be written as
100 + 50 + 6 in expanded form.

Expanded Form is used to find the value of a
digit in a number.
Example:
To find the value of 6 in 1,659 expanded form is
used.
Value of 6 in 1,659 is 600.

Word Form
A way of writing a number using words is
known as Word form.
Example:
184 can be written as
One hundred and eighty four in word form.

All of these represent 475:
Four hundred seventy five.
 400 + 70 + 5
 4 hundreds, 7 tens, 5 ones.


zeros in each number in expanded
form.
Write the number of zeros that shows the
place value of each digit in the number.
Example: 2,658
2000 + 600 + 50 + 8 shows the expanded
form and is also the place value of each
digit.

Important Tips
A comma separates the thousands and the
hundreds.
Expanded form can be used to show each
digit’s value.
